About The Position

This role involves a variety of welding and fabrication tasks, primarily focused on creating and repairing equipment components. The position requires interpreting drawings, fabricating structural steel and plate, and performing welds on various metals and in all positions. The worker may also utilize blacksmithing methods for smaller components and apply heat treatment techniques. Responsibilities include performing welding and fabrication tasks in a designated area or at equipment locations, adhering to safety practices, and maintaining welding equipment. The role also involves assisting skilled tradespeople in repair and installation activities, demonstrating versatility across multiple trades, and performing semiskilled tasks for facility upkeep. Occasional duties may include cleaning, minor repairs to buildings and equipment, and potentially pursuing further training.

Requirements

  • Ability to interpret basic drawings, sketches, or verbal instructions.
  • Proficiency in fabricating frames, supports, and related components using light structural steel and steel plate.
  • Skill in selecting appropriate materials, laying out work, and cutting metal using oxy-acetylene or electric arc methods.
  • Ability to perform welds in all positions, across all types of metals, and with rods of varying sizes.
  • Experience with traditional blacksmithing methods (forge, anvil, heavy sledges).
  • Knowledge of heat treatment techniques for tempering and shaping small tools and parts.
  • Ability to perform varied, non-repetitive welding and fabrication tasks.
  • Willingness to work in awkward positions.
  • Adherence to strict safety practices, including the use of heavy protective gloves and a welder’s mask.
  • Responsibility for the proper care, safe operation, and routine maintenance of welding equipment.
  • Ability to assist as a millwright helper or general maintenance helper.
  • Ability to maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Willingness to assist skilled tradespeople in repair and installation.
  • Ability to provide hands-on support during projects and clean work areas.
  • Versatility across multiple trades, performing semiskilled tasks.
  • Ability to perform tasks such as repairing brickwork, mixing and applying cement, glazing windows, minor carpentry, electrical work, lacing belts and mechanics.
  • Willingness to occasionally clean roofs and waterspouts, remove rubbish, mend caulking, and make minor repairs to machinery, equipment, or buildings.

  • Performs varied, non-repetitive welding and fabrication tasks, working primarily within a designated area but occasionally repairing or assembling components at the equipment’s final location.
  • Works in awkward positions to complete assignments as required.
  • Adheres to strict safety practices, including the use of heavy protective gloves and a welder’s mask during welding and cutting operations.
  • Responsible for the proper care, safe operation, and routine maintenance of welding equipment, including a 440-volt welding transformer on wheels, welding rods, portable oxy-acetylene equipment, clamps, and related tools.
  • Assists as a millwright helper or general maintenance helper when required, supporting broader facility repair and upkeep activities.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work area to ensure safety, efficiency, and readiness for ongoing tasks.
  • Frequently assists skilled tradespeople—including machinists, millwrights, electricians, plumbers, and other craftsmen—in the repair and installation of machinery and equipment.
  • Provides hands-on support during projects, ensures the work area is properly cleaned after tasks are completed, and delivers additional services as needed to facilitate efficient operations and teamwork.
  • Applies tools and techniques from multiple trades to support maintenance and repair activities, demonstrating versatility across disciplines.
  • Performs semiskilled tasks that contribute to the upkeep, functionality, and efficiency of factory buildings, machinery, and equipment.
  • Carries out tasks such as repairing brickwork, mixing and applying cement, glazing windows, minor carpentry, electrical work, lacing belts and mechanics.
