About The Position

Under the direction of the Street Superintendent, with some direction by the Senior Maintenance Technician, the Maintenance Technician I performs a variety of tasks in the general installation, maintenance, and repair of City drainage structures and related facilities. Provides support to other departments within Public Works as assigned. Receives direct supervision from the Street Superintendent and/or Senior Maintenance Technician. Exercises no supervision.

Requirements

  • A High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • General maintenance and repair techniques for common tools and equipment used in drainage and maintenance work, and their basic safety precautions and procedures.
  • Operation and maintenance of power and hand tools.
  • Operate a variety of construction and maintenance equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Work cooperatively with other departments.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Resolve customer complaints and concerns when asked.
  • Follow all City policies and procedures.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Be punctual and regular in attendance.
  • Perform manual labor which may involve heavy lifting, bending, etc.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class C Texas driver’s license.
  • May require higher driver’s license classification after employment at the City’s expense.
  • May be required to obtain certification or licensure specific to area of assignment after date of employment at the City’s expense.
  • Work is performed in a construction site/outdoor environment.
  • May be subject to walking on uneven or unstable terrain.
  • May be subject to repetitive motion and heavy manual labor such as digging, repairing water/sewer pumps, transporting, delivering and picking up debris, or other required equipment.
  • May be confined to small spaces.
  • Daily physical labor which includes entering enclosed spaces, climbing ladders, lifting heavy equipment, digging potholes, and operating other equipment and other physically exerting activities on a daily basis.
  • May be subject to standing, sitting, bending, kneeling, lifting, carrying, reaching, pulling, and crouching.
  • Maybe subject to working extended hours and responding to emergencies on an on-call basis.
  • May be subject to exposure to extreme weather conditions, loud noises, hazardous chemicals and fumes, infectious diseases, air and water borne pathogens, and poisonous insects, spiders, and snakes or wild animals common to water, wastewater and underground utilities.
  • May be exposed to moving traffic.
  • Must be able to work in stressful situations.
  • Must be able to lift up to 85 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Operate construction and maintenance equipment to include, tractors, loaders, mowers, weed eaters, trenchers, and rollers for a variety of maintenance operations involving streets, sidewalks, gutters, drainage channels, etc.
  • Climb and trim trees, prune trees and shrubs.
  • Mow, weed, trim and renovate right-of-way.
  • Assist with the inspection, maintenance, and repair of drainage systems, including storm drains, culverts, ditches, inlets, and channels.
  • Performs debris removal from drainage structures to ensure proper water flow.
  • Perform emergency street, storm drain, or other public service maintenance work as required and/or needed.
  • Assists in concrete work, such as forming, pouring, and finishing headwalls, curbs, and small drainage structures.
  • Street sweeping as designated.
  • Supplement mowing of detention ponds when necessary.
  • Assist with routine inspections and documents findings related to drainage conditions
  • Assist with Identifying priority drainage issues
  • Assist with installation of drainage systems, including storm drains, culverts, ditches, inlets, and channels.
  • Straighten, reset, and install drainage signs and assist with street signs as necessary.
  • Set up traffic safety devices such as cones, signs and barricades as required and/or needed.
  • Assist with traffic control when necessary.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on machinery and equipment as assigned.
  • Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed.
  • Wear personal protective equipment at all times
  • Participate in safety meetings and trainings to ensure best practices are being used
  • Assist with any and all tasks within Public Works as needed, providing support to other sections or departments to ensure efficient operations and completion of city projects.
  • Perform difficult manual labor including heavy lifting, stooping, bending, and twisting.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • On call as required.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hour is essential.
