About The Position

The Supervisor-General Maintenance is responsible for overseeing all maintenance activities assets in addition to all general building maintenance within the service territory. Responsible for the maintenance of all company property and facilities in a safe, functional, and attractive manner and assistance to other departments in this regard by providing resources and specialized equipment. Assigns work to subordinates, selecting proper crews and assuring the availability of equipment needed to complete assignments. Safe work practices are paramount at VNA. The successful candidate should be well versed in Confined Space entry procedures, Lockout/Tagout, Hot Work Safety, work zone and water safety. The incumbent may encounter obstacles such as inclement weather, equipment breakdown, mechanical failure or manpower shortages due to absenteeism. In these cases, the incumbent exercises judgment in rearranging priorities and reallocating subordinates' duties so that Operational requirements are met. Responsible for providing oversight of contracted services on Watershed property and ensure service levels are “best in class”. Responsible for property maintenance such as landscape work, tree work, fence installations and repair, storm drain installations, service road and parking lot construction and snow removal. The incumbent supervises shoreline rip-rap projects for erosion control on the watershed and use of pumps for flood control around the company facilities. Maintenance of the fishing program areas, installation of guard rails, posting of outdoor signs, construction of stone or concrete walls, and debris burning also fall under the jurisdiction of the incumbent. The department also handles any brush or forest fires occurring on the watershed. A challenge to the incumbent is the effective resolution of any emergencies which arise at any time of the day or night. The incumbent lends manpower, various equipment, and personnel supervision to these efforts, seeing them through to completion. The successful candidate also supports reservoir treatment activities. Maintains active liaison with several outside agencies as well as departments within the company. Maintains contact with the Board of Health, Superintendents or Departments of Public Works, Bergen County Cooperative Extension Service, Soil Conservation Service, County Mosquito Commission and State Fish, Game and Wildlife Commission. Coordinates and supervises the spraying of pesticides for insect, weed and brush control, performed by subordinates under the Pesticide License held by the incumbent. In order to maintain the active status of this license, the incumbent must successfully accumulate credit hours in related courses over a five-year interval. Must possess a current NJ DEPE Pesticide applicators license. Support Corporate recycling/green initiatives program. Interact with residents and community leaders regarding watershed issues. Maintains liaison with several major contractors on large projects outside the scope of departmental operations, such as routine landscape maintenance and fence installations and repairs. The incumbent oversees contractors' activities, frequently making on-site inspections to assure successful and timely completion of work. He/she may also rent machinery from contractors as needed. Assists other departments by supplying vehicles, pumps, gas mixers, portable generator, or other equipment as needed. Provides assistance to the Engineering Department in their efforts to survey land by supervising the removal of brush and debris for surveying purposes, providing transportation for reservoir soundings, and by the installation of property monument markers. Provides staffing and support to operations during times of exceptional system demands. Prepares and presents training programs to subordinates on job duties and safety procedures. Oversee and maintain compliant with departments backflow and cross connection control program. Serves on emergency duty to resolve operational problems, which may arise at any time. Assists other departments by supplying vehicles, pumps, gas mixes, portable generator, or other equipment as needed. Maintains oil and waste spill equipment, responds to requests for cleanup or containment of oil and waste spills, and assists in preparing the final report of the costs there of. The department also maintains the equipment used for disinfection of clear wells, tanks or other similar structures, and at the request of Director-Water Quality, carries out the disinfection procedures. The department maintains equipment and makes applications of chemicals used in treating the water supply reservoirs for algae control.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 10 years related work experience in general facilities and grounds maintenance.
  • Experienced in all aspects of building maintenance including plumbing, carpentry, welding, roofing, masonry, and painting.
  • Experienced in land maintenance including tree work, excavation, brush clearing, road maintenance, and fence repairs.
  • Must be able to efficiently manage several crews simultaneously performing different tasks.
  • Must be able to operate or understand heavy equipment such as a backhoe, bulldozer, skid-steer, work barge, and boats.
  • Must be competent in Microsoft Office, with heavy use of PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Must be able to prepare budgets and maintain KPI reports for a team.
  • Must possess a current NJ DEPE Pesticide applicators license.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration or related field is preferred or equivalent work experience.
  • Water Treatment experience is desirable.
  • Experience using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) is desirable.
