About The Position

The Department of Agriculture and Markets is seeking five Maintenance Supervisor 1s to oversee maintenance shops on the New York State Fairgrounds. The maintenance shops include paint, plumbing, carpentry, automotive, and electrical. The Fairgrounds are located at 581 State Fair Boulevard in Syracuse, NY, offering a comfortable work environment, and free parking. These are permanent, non-competitive, CSEA-represented positions working 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday. The Maintenance Supervisor 1 supervises a crew of skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled positions in maintenance, repair, installation and construction activities of the New York State Fairgrounds facilities, property, and equipment. The incumbent also performs skilled journey-level trades work, in one specific skilled trade and/or a combination of skilled and semiskilled duties in various skilled trades for the repair and maintenance of the Fairgrounds property.

Requirements

• One year of trade experience subsequent to the completion of an apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience such as that required for a Trades Specialist (Carpenter), Trades Specialist (Electrician), Service & Repair Mechanic (Electronics), Trades Generalist, Grounds Construction Supervisor, Trades Specialist (Locksmith), Trades Specialist (Machinist), Trades Specialist (Mason & Plasterer), Service & Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment), Trades Specialist (Painter), Trades Specialist (Plumber & Steamfitter), Service & Repair Mechanic (HVAC-R), Trades Specialist (Roofing), or Trades Specialist (Welder).

Responsibilities

• Supervising and instructing others in preparing surfaces and applying coats of paint, varnish, and other finishes and stains to decorate and protect interior or exterior surfaces and fixtures of buildings, structures, furniture, equipment, and materials.
• Supervising and instructing others in installation, alteration, and repair of pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, ventilating, heating control, water, and drainage systems according to specification and plumbing codes at the New York State Fairgrounds.
• Supervising and instructing others in journey-level carpentry work and construction and repair of structures and other items. Additional duties include roofing, millwork, furniture construction, furniture finishing and repair, cabinet work, and use of common construction tools and equipment. Incumbents may also install and adjust door and building hardware, including locks, door closures, doorknobs, hinges, door checks, sash fittings, and other lock work activities.
• Supervising and instructing others in skilled mechanical work in automotive repair including the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of gasoline, diesel-powered, and alternative fuel self-propelled and non-self-propelled motor-driven equipment. This position may also perform routine maintenance and mechanical repairs on disabled vehicles, construction, and other equipment on the fairgrounds.
• Supervising and instructing other skilled trades people in repairs, maintaining and installing electrical systems and equipment such as motors, wiring, switches, alarm systems, controls, traffic signals and related equipment, such as radios, televisions, and music players.
