About The Position

This position reports to the Supervisor of Signs and Markings and is responsible for assisting in the preparation, layout, installation, removal, and maintenance of traffic control devices, including traffic signs and stanchions. The role involves operating heavy equipment, removing old paint markings from roads, mixing and applying paint for road and parking lot markings, and interacting with outside agencies to ascertain service locations. The position also requires responding to emergency situations, frequently lifting and carrying equipment, operating and inspecting vehicles, performing routine maintenance and major overhauling of equipment, and performing metal fabrication and welding. Additionally, the role requires adherence to Ministry of Transportation and Ministry of Labour work zone standards, completion of daily driver logs, and performing Occupational Health & Safety duties as outlined in the Corporation’s Health and Safety Program. Other related duties, including manual labor, may be assigned.

Requirements

  • Must have an Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency.
  • Must have over three (3) years of experience in utilizing various construction equipment such as 60 pound post drivers, spud bars, large jack hammer drills, angle grinders, line eradication machines, sledge hammers, acetylene torch, forklifts, power augers, etc.
  • Must hold a Transportation of Dangerous Goods Certificate.
  • Must hold and maintain a current, valid and lawful Class ‘DZ’ Driver’s Licence in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act, for the purposes of operating a City of Windsor vehicle and provide a driver’s abstract as a condition of employment.
  • Must have knowledge and experience in the operation and maintenance of mobile spray painting equipment.
  • Must have knowledge of metal work shaping procedures.
  • Must have knowledge and be capable of reading blueprints and drawings for pre-marking of roadway lines and parking lot striping and proper application of pavement markings.
  • Will be required to work shift work as per the C.U.P.E. Local 543 Collective Agreement.
  • Must complete a post-offer agility test in an effort to assist the successful candidate in completing the position tasks safely and to aid in minimizing injuries on the job.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of MIG welding will be considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting in the preparation, layout, installation, removal and maintenance of traffic control devices, including traffic signs and stanchions using heavy equipment such as hydraulic and manual stanchion pullers, jack hammers, and 60 pound stanchion pounder.
  • Removes old paint markings from roads using a grinder machine.
  • Working on roadways in properly established safe work zones performing work such as pre-marking the layout of road and parking lot markings according to drawings, blueprints and sketches.
  • Mixing paint with thinners to ensure the proper consistency of paint; Painting road and parking lot markings using machinery such as stripper truck, Laser painting machine, (guns fixed or by handspray).
  • Interacting with outside agencies such as Bell Canada, Windsor Utilities, Union Gas, Cable T.V. to ascertain location of services.
  • Responding to emergency situations resulting from public complaints.
  • Frequently lifting and carrying various equipment and supplies.
  • Lifting when trying to straighten a bent stanchion.
  • Operating safely, re-fueling and visually inspecting and reporting deficiencies or damages to assigned motor vehicles including fork lift.
  • Performing routine maintenance/repair on various equipment including Laser painting machines and hot paint striper truck.
  • Performing major overhauling of Laser paint machines and equipment during the winter months including rebuilding and refurbishing, minor repairs and adjustments during the paint season.
  • Performing metal fabrication and welding.
  • Abiding by Ministry of Transportation and Ministry of Labour work zone standards and complete daily driver logs.
  • Performing Occupational Health & Safety duties as outlined in the Corporation’s Health and Safety Program.
  • Performing other related duties as required, including manual labour work, as assigned.
