About The Position

This position performs a variety of skilled work in two or more of the mechanical and construction trades to repair, construct, and/or maintain buildings, grounds, and equipment. It is with the Office of the Military, State Maintenance, and supervised by the Facility Supervisor III. The work schedule is typically Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 4 PM with an hour lunch. The role involves journey-level, skilled work in building and mechanical trades for construction, alteration, repair, maintenance, and preventive maintenance on buildings, facilities, equipment, and grounds. This includes carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, locksmith, painting, grounds, equipment, and concrete for the Office of the Military bases in Carson City. The position may require travel to multiple locations, a flexible work schedule for emergencies (stand-by status), and participation in an on-call rotation. A criminal history check is required. Incumbents may also serve as lead workers or first-line supervisors for contractors or other staff.

Requirements

  • Four years of progressively responsible experience under the supervision of journey level trades persons in two or more of the major building or mechanical trades which included responsibility for performing a variety of repair and maintenance activities, laying out jobs and ordering materials; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of safety hazards and safe working procedures.
  • Working knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the building and mechanical trades as related to the maintenance and repair of buildings, grounds, and equipment.
  • Ability to prepare written work orders, requisition supplies, and prepare specifications.
  • Ability to read and interpret repair orders, service manuals, and building codes.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction drawings, and electrical schematics.
  • Ability to plan projects, sketch working drawings, and lay out materials.
  • Ability to estimate the materials and time required to complete projects.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, fractions and decimals to calculate dimensions, volumes, capacities, material needs and lay out projects.
  • Ability to work on ladders and scaffolding and in confined building access areas.
  • Ability to use various diagnostic and testing equipment.
  • Skill in safely operating and maintaining hand and power tools used in the building and mechanical trades.
  • Skill in performing a variety of work in two or more of the major building or mechanical trades to include plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, welding and equipment mechanics.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining vehicles and equipment as required by the agency to which assigned.
  • Must pass a criminal history check.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled plumbing work to maintain, repair, and modify plumbing systems and fixtures, review blueprints, determine material needs, replace pipes, install and repair hot water heaters, and repair three-phase electric well pumps and controls.
  • Perform skilled carpentry work to construct, maintain, repair, and modify facilities, fixtures, furniture, and woodwork; review plans and specifications; lay out projects; construct forms and pour concrete; construct roofs and walls; install doors and windows.
  • Perform skilled electrical work including reviewing blueprints and schematics, calculating load requirements, laying out projects, installing wiring, fixtures, and equipment, troubleshooting and repairing electric motors, generators, and equipment.
  • Perform skilled painting work, including preparing surfaces, applying paint, applying wall coverings, and staining and varnishing furniture.
  • Perform skilled equipment mechanical work to maintain equipment in proper working order, including repairing carburetors, overhauling transmissions, repairing differentials, and repairing hydraulic systems.
  • May serve as a lead worker or first-line supervisor to semi-skilled or general labor staff.
  • Maintain equipment maintenance and facility records and prepare related reports.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
