About The Position

This position involves performing various skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of machinery, buildings, and equipment. The role requires performing skilled work of a journeyman level in several trades and other related duties as required. The employee receives general direction from a superior with latitude for independent judgment, and their work is reviewed upon completion.

Requirements

  • Must have a working knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, and processes involved in several trades such as plumbing, painting, carpentry, HVAC systems.
  • Must have special skills in heavy equipment operation.
  • Must have a working knowledge of the use of common tools and materials.
  • Ability to make varied repairs without supervision.
  • Ability to supervise a small group of helpers.
  • Ability to work from pencil sketches/diagrams.
  • Completion of twelve (12) school grades or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • At least two (2) years of employment in building and plant maintenance work, involving building, electrical, or mechanical trades.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Rhode Island Driver’s License.
  • Must have the ability to obtain a military driver’s license.
  • Must have the ability to operate various types of heavy equipment and obtain DOD certification if required.
  • Must have a Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) and National Agency Investigation (NAC) background check.
  • Must have never been convicted by civilian/military court except for minor traffic violations and similar infractions, or history of juvenile delinquency in the two (2) years preceding proposed employment.
  • Must have the ability to obtain a security clearance.
  • Must be physically qualified to perform work assignments as evidenced by a physician’s certificate at time of appointment.

  • Ability to obtain a military driver’s license.
  • Ability to operate various types of heavy equipment and obtain DOD certification if required for the use of such equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Install and maintain plumbing fixtures, seam lines, steam heating and cooking equipment.
  • Cut, thread, and install pipe for steam water lines.
  • Install electric circuits, wall plugs, and lighting equipment; repair and recondition fans.
  • Inspect and maintain all civil engineering motorized equipment (e.g., snow blowers, lawn mowers) semi-annually or as required.
  • Clean and oil all electrical motors installed in real property facilities (e.g., pump house, sewer lift station, boiler motors, circulators).
  • Perform sweeping for streets, parking lots, sidewalks, and entrances.
  • Operate lathes, millers, drills, and other machine shop equipment.
  • Paint buildings, walls, or other surfaces.
  • Perform masonry work in connection with buildings, foundations, walks, and wells.
  • Repair doors, doorframes, and furniture; fabricate and install temporary partitions.
  • Operate and maintain wood lathes, sanders, joiners, power saws, planers, and related power and hand tools.
  • Make repairs to roofs and install flashing and spouts.
  • Make repairs on refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
  • Weld and braze metals using arc and acetylene welders.
  • Perform ground maintenance and pick-up janitorial supplies.
  • Respond to all after-hours facility emergencies.
  • Accomplish other related work assignments.
