About The Position

Performs journeyman tasks in the painting, decorating, sign making, and refinishing of building interiors and exteriors and other structures, equipment, and furnishings; may instruct, or supervise apprentices.

Requirements

Successful completion of a union sponsored apprenticeship training program to qualify as a journeyman painter.
Working knowledge of the tools, materials, methods and standard practices of the trade.
Ability to make simple mathematical computations in estimating area of surfaces to be painted.
Ability to instruct and direct unskilled workers.
Ability to blend paints and match colors.
Ability to interpret and work from verbal or written specifications.
Skill in the use of the tools of the trade.
Willingness to travel and possession of valid Illinois driver’s license as required by individual positions within the class.
Ability to lift 0 – 90 lbs.; carry, push/pull up to 50 lbs.

Responsibilities

Prepares interior or exterior walls, metal surfaces, floors, ceilings, and equipment for painting including taping and finishing drywall.
Applies paint, shellac, varnish, enamel, stain, or other protective to prepared surfaces using brush, spray, cloth, or other means.
Designs and fabricates facility and Capitol Complex signage for the entire state.
Applies sizing materials.
Removes soiled or excess paint; glazes windows.
Prepares and applies patching plaster as needed.
May instruct and supervise apprentice painters.
Performs other duties as required or assigned.
