About The Position

Performs journeyman tasks in the painting, decorating, sign making, and refinishing of building interiors and exteriors and other structures, equipment, and furnishings; may instruct, or supervise apprentices.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a union sponsored apprenticeship training program to qualify as a journeyman painter.
  • Working knowledge of the tools, materials, methods and standard practices of the trade.
  • Ability to make simple mathematical computations in estimating area of surfaces to be painted.
  • Ability to instruct and direct unskilled workers.
  • Ability to blend paints and match colors.
  • Ability to interpret and work from verbal or written specifications.
  • Skill in the use of the tools of the trade.
  • Willingness to travel and possession of valid Illinois driver’s license as required by individual positions within the class.
  • Ability to lift 0 – 90 lbs.; carry, push/pull up to 50 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares interior or exterior walls, metal surfaces, floors, ceilings, and equipment for painting including taping and finishing drywall.
  • Applies paint, shellac, varnish, enamel, stain, or other protective to prepared surfaces using brush, spray, cloth, or other means.
  • Designs and fabricates facility and Capitol Complex signage for the entire state.
  • Applies sizing materials.
  • Removes soiled or excess paint; glazes windows.
  • Prepares and applies patching plaster as needed.
  • May instruct and supervise apprentice painters.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
