About The Position

Works under general supervision to perform repair and maintenance work and perform other generalized duties in the operations of county facilities. This position requires the ability to function in a prison environment and must be able to work all shifts, weekends, and be on call as required. The role involves a variety of general maintenance and mechanical tasks.

Requirements

Two (2) years of experience as a maintenance mechanic
High school diploma or possess a GED
Must be able to function in a prison environment
Must have a valid Tennessee driver’s license or secure one by date of employment
Must be able to work all shifts, weekends, and on call as required
Must pass a NCIC background check
Must successfully pass a drug test
All employees hired after September 1, 1986, must be residents of Shelby County and shall continue to reside in the County as a condition of their employment. (Note: This residency requirement has an exemption for Correction Officers employed by the Division of Corrections.)

General knowledge of wood, metal tools and instruments and their maintenance and use

Responsibilities

Performs various general maintenance and/or mechanical duties as they relate to the specific position.
Replaces defective electrical switches and other fixtures.
Paints walls, floors, woodwork and fixtures of buildings, using spray guns and brushes.
Repairs and replaces gauges, valves, pressure regulators and open clogged drains using plumber's tools.
Replaces and repairs brick and plaster walls.
Keeps records and makes reports.
Makes minor plumbing, mechanical, electrical and carpentry repairs.
Makes or repairs counters, benches, partitions, using appropriate tools.
Assists higher skilled maintenance personnel.
Performs other related duties as required or directed.
