About The Position

The Level 1 Electrician (Mastery Level) is a highly skilled professional responsible for the safe, reliable installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of complex electrical systems across refinery operations. This role serves as a technical expert, providing leadership, mentorship, and direction to other electricians and contractors while ensuring compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Completion of a formal electrical apprenticeship or equivalent industrial experience
  • Journeyman Electrician certification or equivalent experience
  • Extensive experience in industrial or refinery electrical maintenance
  • Advanced knowledge of: Electrical theory and application, AC/DC systems, power distribution, and motor controls, Hazardous (classified) locations (Class I, Div 1 & 2), Electrical codes and standards (e.g., NFPA 70/NEC, NFPA 70E)
  • Demonstrated ability to: Troubleshoot complex electrical and control systems independently, Lead jobs and coordinate multi-discipline work, Make sound decisions in high-risk environments
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills

Nice To Haves

  • Two-year associate’s or technical degree in maintenance preferred
  • NCCER or equivalent advanced electrical certification
  • Experience with refinery-specific systems and processes
  • Working knowledge of instrumentation and controls
  • Experience with SAP or CMMS systems

Responsibilities

  • Independently troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair complex electrical systems, including: High and low voltage systems, Motors, compressors, and critical rotating equipment, Switchgear, substations, and motor control centers (MCCs), Distributed Control Systems (DCS) interfaces and field wiring
  • Lead and execute critical maintenance and turnaround activities
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior electricians and apprentices
  • Plan and coordinate electrical work with operations, engineering, and contractors
  • Read and interpret advanced electrical drawings, one-lines, loop diagrams, and specifications
  • Ensure strict adherence to all safety protocols, including: Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Arc flash and electrical safety boundaries, Hazardous area classification requirements
  • Perform equipment inspections and predictive/preventive maintenance
  • Identify reliability issues and recommend improvements
  • Support root cause failure analysis (RCFA) and incident investigations
  • Verify quality and compliance of contractor electrical work
