About The Position

Join our dedicated Public Works team as a Maintenance Worker III (Crew Lead) and make a positive impact on the community of the City of Milpitas! The two (2) current vacancies are in the Facilities and Utilities Maintenance Sections of the Public Works Department. This recruitment may be used to establish an eligible list for future Maintenance Worker III vacancies. The Maintenance Worker III serves as lead worker over a crew within their assigned area of responsibility to perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of public facilities. This is the advanced journey level class in the maintenance worker class series. The Maintenance Worker Ill is distinguished from other classes in the maintenance series by the responsibility assumed by leading a crew and by the performance of the more complex and responsible duties assigned to positions in this series. Incumbents at this level typically possess specialized skills, knowledge and abilities, and work independently. Facilities Maintenance: The ideal candidate is a skilled and dependable professional with experience in public works facilities. They demonstrate strong leadership as a crew lead, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to standard. They bring hands-on expertise in tasks such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and equipment operation, along with the ability to read blueprints and maintain systems in compliance with health and safety codes. They are proficient in maintaining pools, pumps, filters, and related infrastructure. Utility Section: The ideal candidate is a skilled and experienced maintenance worker that is comfortable repairing and maintaining water distribution and/or storm/sewer collection systems assets and equipment. They are good at motivating and directing crews and are comfortable interacting with a variety of people including the general public, businesses, and contractors. They are familiar with utility maintenance best practices and related regulations that protect public health and the environment. They take pride in public service and contribute to the safety, function, and appearance of community facilities and infrastructure. This posting is written notice of a permanent, vacant position in the Utilities Section. Requirements

  • Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of public facilities including the areas of streets, utilities, parks, street landscape maintenance, facilities, and/or recreation, comparable to that of the Maintenance Worker Il in the City of Milpitas.
  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade (e.g. high school diploma or GED)
  • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid California Class C Driver’s License.
  • When assigned to Facilities: Possession of and ability to maintain a Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) within 11 months of appointment.
  • When assigned to the Utilities Section: Water Utility Section: Class B Commercial Driver’s License with a Tanker endorsement within 11 months of appointment.
  • Possession of, and ability to maintain, a State of California Water Distribution Operator Certificate Grade II from State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB)
  • Obtain and maintain a State of California Water Distribution Operator Certificate Grade III from SWRCB with 11 months of appointment.
  • Obtain and maintain a State of California Water Treatment Operator I from SWRCB within 11 months of appointment.
  • Storm/Sewer Section: Possession of, and ability to maintain a Wastewater Collection System Maintenance Certificate, Grade II from the California Water Environment Association (CWEA).
  • Visual Requirements: Discern colors
  • Auditory Requirements: 100-decibel hearing
  • Physical exam, and drug and alcohol screening.
  • Work is mainly performed outdoors; ability to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, squat, kneel, crawl, bend, and stoop at any given time; ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 75 pounds of weight throughout the day and occasionally up to 90 pounds; exposure to outdoor elements in all weather conditions throughout the year, confined spaces, hazardous waste, sewage, chemicals, herbicides and pesticides; ability to walk on uneven surfaces; ability to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Milpitas.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as lead worker over an assigned crew
  • Provide guidance and training to less experienced personnel
  • Assist assigned supervisor with daily supervision of personnel and the timely completion of assigned duties
  • Check work of assigned crew
  • Maintain timesheets and other records as appropriate
  • Ensure that safety measures and practices are utilized at all times
  • Performs a variety of duties at the skilled level to maintain and repair city buildings, structures and their attendant equipment
  • Duties include carpentry, painting, lock-smith, plumbing, electrical control systems, HVAC systems, read blue prints, build and assemble furnishings
  • Balance and maintain proper water chemistry
  • Monitor/adjust filtration equipment
  • Calibrate chemical probes
  • Maintain/repair filters, pumps, motors, lines, tanks
  • Maintain and ensure all aspects of the Civic Center pond and Sports Center pool operations
  • Meet state and federal health code standards
  • Provide training and assist the Facilities Supervisor or Public Works Manager in assigning and coordination of work
  • Requisition of supplies and inspection of work performed by staff and contractors
  • Repair water and sewer line breaks
  • Dig ditches to lay and/or expose water and sewage lines
  • Cut and replace damaged pipes
  • Perform minor plumbing and electrical repairs
  • Clean and remove blockages from sewage and storm drain lines
  • Operate, exercise, repair, or replace water valves
  • Install, repair, or replace fire hydrants, water meters, backflow devices, water main and service lines
  • Flush water distribution system
  • Collect water samples for analytical purposes
  • Respond to water quality complaints
  • Maintain records of system performance, maintenance, and repairs
  • Respond to after hour calls
  • Disinfect water mains and service lines after pressure reductions
  • Install meter boxes
  • Perform related duties as assigned
