About The Position

This position is located at the Governor Morehead School for the Blind and involves highly skilled work in the general maintenance, repair, and/or construction of buildings, related equipment, and plumbing, heating/cooling, and electrical systems across campus facilities. Work is performed in accordance with maintenance schedules and operational priorities supporting the educational and residential environment of the school. Special repair assignments are typically received through work orders from authorized personnel.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, practices, and materials used in general maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery.
  • Skill in the use of tools required in various technically complex trades.
  • Ability to understand and work from sketches or penciled drawings.
  • Ability to operate the more common types of machine shop or woodworking power equipment.
  • Ability to guide the work of skilled workers.
  • Ability to read and interpret building codes.
  • Ability to read blueprints.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to plan projects, assign tasks, and ensure project deadlines are met.
  • Physical strength sufficient to perform heavy physical tasks for extended periods of time.
  • Knowledge of plumbing systems including piping, fixtures, drainage systems, and water distribution systems used in institutional or school facilities.
  • Knowledge of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and the ability to diagnose problems, perform maintenance, and assist with repair of HVAC equipment and related mechanical systems.
  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and two (2) years of experience in the performance of the full range of journey-level tasks associated with two (2) or more highly complex mechanical or building trades; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III, or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnosing system failures, performing preventative maintenance, repairing piping systems, fixtures, boilers, and HVAC equipment, and ensuring systems operate efficiently and in compliance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Determining the extent of repair or replacement work required and ensuring building systems remain safe and operational.
  • Potentially supervising employees performing journeyman-level work in electrical, plumbing, masonry, heating and air, carpentry, cabinet making, roofing, painting, or other skilled trades.
  • Independently performing a wide variety of highly technical tasks at and above the journeyman level to maintain and support the school’s facilities and infrastructure.
