About The Position

The Maintenance, Building position supports the functionality, safety, accessibility, and aesthetic quality of the College’s facilities and grounds. This role performs skilled building maintenance, carpentry, painting, flooring, ceiling work, furniture and equipment setup, grounds care, snow removal, fleet and grounds equipment operation, warehouse support, and building preventative maintenance. The position helps ensure that buildings, sidewalks, parking lots, landscaped areas, service areas, and campus equipment are maintained in a safe, attractive, and operationally effective condition.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED required.
Six years of diversified, successful experience in building maintenance, facilities maintenance, carpentry, equipment operation, or a closely related field preferred.
Two years of grounds care experience preferred.
Experience with carpentry, drywall, painting, ceiling systems, flooring, furniture repair/setup, grounds care, snow removal, fleet or grounds equipment operation, and preventative maintenance preferred.
Knowledge of horticulture, heavy equipment operations, grounds care equipment operations, pesticide and herbicide equipment operations, Right-to-Know laws, and handling, labeling, and disposal of hazardous materials preferred.
Private pesticide applicator certificate per Wisconsin statutes, or ability to acquire the certificate within the timeframe outlined by NTC after starting the position.
Willingness to maintain and/or acquire certifications and licensing required by the position and the needs of NTC.
Ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, emails and memos; discuss information one-on-one and in small groups.
Ability to accurately add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure; compute rate, ratio, and percent.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written, oral, or diagrammed instructions; solve problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Ability to navigate to and between computer applications; read/reply to emails, open/save/close files and applications; find, format and print documents; operate common office equipment.
Ability to pleasantly initiate, maintain and end a conversation; act in a professional manner using appropriate language and body language.
A valid Wisconsin Driver’s license is required.

Nice To Haves

Associate’s Degree or equivalent training from an accredited school in a building trades, facilities maintenance, horticulture, grounds maintenance, or related field is preferred.
Knowledge of horticulture, heavy equipment operations, grounds care equipment operations, pesticide and herbicide equipment operations, Right-to-Know laws, and handling, labeling, and disposal of hazardous materials preferred.

Responsibilities

Install and repair doors, windows, cabinetry, trim, mirrors, signs, display cases, office decorations, and custom woodwork.
Build, repair, refinish, assemble, arrange, and install furniture, fixtures, partition walls, desks, tables, benches, lab benches, shop equipment, and specialized instructional or service equipment.
Maintain stock, order replacement parts, manage supplies and tools, complete basic HVAC and building preventative maintenance, (e.g. Air filter changes, belts, Greasing, and diffusers.) and update records.
Perform layout, measuring, installation, and repair work using appropriate tools, laser levels, and safe work practices.
Install, repair, and finish drywall, including hanging sheets, installing corner bead, taping, mudding, texturing, and smooth finishing.
Perform painting, wallpaper work, color changes, touchups, and maintain records of new and existing colors across projects.
Install new and modify existing drop ceiling systems, including layout, material sourcing, and repair work.
Install, repair, and perform preventative maintenance on carpet, vinyl, tile, wood, luxury vinyl tile, laminate, and epoxy flooring.
Maintain inventories of paint, flooring, ceiling, and related materials; rotate stock and purchase supplies as needed.
Perform all duties directly associated with grounds maintenance and care, including mowing, cutting, trimming, and maintaining grass-covered areas.
Maintain shrubs, flower beds, trees, and other horticultural areas; repair damage caused by construction, vandalism, natural events, disease, or other causes.
Evaluate and recommend improvements that enhance campus aesthetics, efficiency, and grounds maintenance practices.
Maintain outside signage, furniture, flags, refuse containers, protective barriers, sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and other exterior areas.
Maintain outside trash containers, pick up trash and debris from grounds, and collect recycling.
Operate and maintain snow removal equipment to keep campus open and safe. Snow removal may require shift hours to be adjusted to accommodate the needs of the college.
Know and practice safety precautions in the performance of all duties, including appropriate use, handling, labeling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials.
Selectively apply fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides to grounds and maintain all required records; maintain or acquire required applicator certification within the timeframe established by NTC.
Comply with emergency assignments as directed by a supervisor or member of management.
Provide guidance to part-time summer help crews as assigned.
Communicate effectively with co-workers, faculty, students, management, administration, and members of the public using College facilities and grounds.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Conduct forklift and telehandler training for employees, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and operational best practices.
