About The Position

The State of Connecticut, Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) is seeking a Maintainer (Driver/Equipment Operator) to help care for and preserve the State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown. This is meaningful, hands-on work supporting the mission of honoring Connecticut's veterans with dignity and respect. The State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown is the largest state-operated veterans cemetery in Connecticut. It is under the administrative control of the Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs and its Commissioner. Burial in the State Veterans Cemetery is reserved for eligible veterans and their spouses. The cemetery averages 17 to 23 burials a week and can conduct as many as 28 per week. In a state agency this class is accountable for performing duties a substantial amount of time (75%) in one or both of the following areas: Transportation of individuals serviced by the agency; Grounds care (outside services) equipment operation.

Requirements

  • Must be a current State of CT employee of the agency listed above for at least six (6) months of full-time service or full-time equivalent service, absent any applicable collective bargaining language.

  • Ability to operate equipment and vehicles used in daily work.
  • Ability to learn policies and procedures.
  • Ability to operate, care for and perform minor maintenance on tools and equipment used in daily work.

  • Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
  • May be required to lift moderate to heavy weights.
  • May be exposed to extreme weather conditions and risk of injury from equipment and assaultive and/or abusive patients and/or clients.
  • The appointing authority may require completion of an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class.
  • Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.

  • Experience in groundskeeping.
  • Experience in snowplow operation and snowblower operation.
  • Experience in the operation and maintenance of skid steer loaders, zero turn lawn mowers.
  • Experience operating excavators and utilizing attachments associated with the excavators.
  • Experience in setting federal grave markers.

Responsibilities

  • Meeting and greeting visitors and funeral directors, setting up and breaking down for special events, and assisting with traffic control.
  • Assisting with funerals through operations such as: digging cremation graves, opening, interring and closing of columbarium niches, closing of graves, removal and resetting of federal markers, and installation and removal of ground protection devices.
  • Maintaining the grounds through: mowing, string trimming, fertilizing and weed control, growing plants, maintaining the various trees, snow removal, maintenance of buildings and cleaning restrooms.
  • Operating various equipment and vehicles, including: dump trucks of less than 5-tons, complex mowers, tractors and skid steers.
  • Keeps simple records and prepares reports related to duties.
  • Operates equipment such as: Skid steer loader; High productivity front end machine or multi-attachment snow blower and/or mower; Power drain cleaning equipment; Power striping machine; Chain saws and/or brush chippers; Self-propelled sweeping and/or vacuum machine; Other related commercial and heavy-duty equipment.
