About The Position

Presides over domestic relations legal hearings on behalf of the Judge. Decides cases and mediates settlements. Is a mandated reporter who serves at the pleasure of the Judge.

Requirements

  • BA or BS Degree in pre-law or related field and JD, plus over five years of practicing law.
  • After appointment, willingness and ability to successfully complete one judicial college course per year, bi-annually fulfill 40 hours of continuing education, and any other licensure and certification requirements.
  • Ability to document identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of original appointment as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.
  • Admitted and in good standing to practice law in the State of Ohio

Responsibilities

  • Presides over domestic relations settlement hearings and hears pre- and post-decree cases.
  • Accepts and evaluates evidence in accordance with established rules of evidence, hears testimony, facts and arguments, rules on objections, and applies laws and case law.
  • Rules on motions and makes determinations.
  • Relates legal principles to facts and determines Court response.
  • Maintains fairness and impartiality and writes legally defensible decisions.
  • Hears cases pertaining to jailed litigants pursuant to attachment.
  • Sets bond, prepares release orders, and submits through eFiling.
  • Hears non-contested divorces, dissolutions, and ex parte domestic violence cases.
  • Conducts conferences to encourage settlement of cases or issues.
  • Mediates with parties to assist in reaching agreements.
  • Mediates child visitation and other disputes.
  • Writes Agreed Orders.
  • Controls and maintains courtroom procedure and conduct on part of attorneys and litigants, and issues contempt orders.
  • Monitors, manages and controls hearing times to ensure that cases are heard as scheduled.
  • Follows-up on attorney requests for information and corrections to previous actions.
  • Prepares temporary support orders and attorney fee motions from affidavits.
  • Analyzes and issues attachments; reviews current attachments and determines status.
  • Stays current on new or changed statutes, procedures and case law.
  • Conducts legal research, and analyzes legal decisions, cases and documents.
  • Maintains record of court proceedings by tape recording or court reporter transcript.
  • Maintains docket sheet of tape-recording counter and result codes.
  • Marks and keeps track of exhibits.
  • Maintains daily time sheets.
  • Writes articles for local bar publication.
  • Talks to schools and presents seminars to promote public relations and judicial system, and to help encourage law and order within the community.
