About The Position

The Clerk of Superior Court nominates individuals for appointment to the position of magistrate to the Senior Resident Superior Court Judge, who then makes the appointment for an initial two-year term. The Chief District Court Judge determines the work schedules for magistrates. Magistrates are judicial officials responsible for evaluating requests for criminal charges, issuing criminal process and search warrants, and conducting initial appearances, including bond hearings, for defendants upon arrest. They also preside over Small Claims Court hearings and marriage ceremonies. This is a full-time position serving as an officer of district court in accordance with NC General Statutes §7A 170-179.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university; OR eight years as a law enforcement officer in NC; OR an associate degree and four years of work experience in a related field (teaching, social services, law enforcement, arbitration or mediation, the court system, or counseling).
  • Must be able to work irregular hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be a resident of Davidson County or one of its contiguous counties at the time of nomination or a contiguous county.
  • Proficient in general office and computer skills.
  • Understanding of North Carolina Court Systems procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the general public.
