About The Position

The Magazine Assistant will support production of Horizon Review, a local literature and fine arts magazine operated under Fusion Theatre Company, a nonprofit theatre and cultural arts organization in Albuquerque. The role is designed as a mentorship for UNM students and beginning professionals; extensive experience is not required, and training will be provided. The assistant will gain experience through workshops and individual assignments involving magazine production, social media marketing, editing, typesetting, and print preparation. The position requires a work-study award and is a part-time work-study role of 5–10 hours per week. Some work is performed remotely, with required in-person hours for team meetings and coworking sessions.

Requirements

• Must be enrolled in a degree-seeking program at UNM and enrolled at least half-time (six hours) at UNM during fall and spring semesters; audit hours do not count.
• Work-study candidates must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress and have a work-study award.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Independent time-management skills.
• Strong copywriting and proofreading skills.
• Willingness to work both individually and as part of a group.
• Ability to solve problems creatively and effectively.
• Interest in learning about magazine-production roles and tasks.
• Tech savvy.

Nice To Haves

• Previous experience in marketing, event planning, editing, or publishing.
• Previous experience with Microsoft Suite and Adobe InDesign.
• Strong knowledge of writing conventions and their effectiveness.

Responsibilities

• Help prepare for the magazine launch in Spring 2027.
• Complete delegated individual tasks remotely, including social media marketing, submission review, editing, and design.
• Create and submit reports.
• Design social media materials or magazine assets.
• Attend workshops and required in-person team meetings and coworking sessions.
• Assist with other magazine-related tasks as needed.
