About The Position

Inspects, maintains, and repairs locomotives in accordance with FRA regulations. Paid training will commence in New Smyrna Beach training center, for two (2) weeks; thereafter, new hire Machinist will return to the New Symrna Beach locomative shop for on-the-job training. Second Shift - 1500 - 2300, Days off Saturday/Sunday Initial pay between $28.31/hr - $31.85/hr based off experience. Salary will increase to $35.39/hr once qualified (typically takes 6 months to a year).

Requirements

High School diploma/GED and One year certificate from college or technical school; or 4 years heavy mechanical repair experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience reading blueprints.
Ability to understand both verbal and written communications – both general and technical.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
Problem solving and trouble shooting skills.
Must have mechanical aptitude.
Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Must be qualified welder.
Must have current valid driver’s license.
Regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
Occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Exposure to equipment that intensifies the heat factor on an occasional basis.
Regularly works near moving mechanical parts.
Occasionally works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and risk of electrical shock.
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
Must have personal tools (complete set of small hand tools up to and including ½" drive ratchet and socket set).

Responsibilities

Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly.
Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly.
Installs machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and tests operation of units to ensure functionality and performance.
Operates welding equipment to cut or weld parts.
Performs mechanical inspection on locomotives and repairs defects to conform to FRA regulations.
Tests locomotives for performance by use of load box.
Replaces brake shoes on locomotives.
Disassembles and rebuilds locomotive trucks and replaces wheel sets and traction motors.
Repairs and rebuilds diesel engines, air compressors, and many other locomotive components.
Disassembles and reassembles locomotives and machinery.
