About The Position

Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-based Sciences & Education (CLASSE) is hiring machinists for its professional machining and fabrication team across multiple shops on Cornell’s Ithaca campus. The role is based in the Newman Machine Shop and involves working with technical staff, students, researchers, scientists, faculty, and engineers to create parts and assemblies that support university research. The work is varied, collaborative, and often involves unique components and equipment for research programs. The positions are fixed-term staff roles with an initial appointment period of three years and may be renewed based on available funding and satisfactory performance. The position is onsite in Ithaca, New York. The pay range is $31.60–$36.72 per hour. Visa sponsorship is not available. Machinists work on multiple jobs at a time in different stages of design, fabrication, and assembly. They use manual and computer-controlled machine tools, CAD/CAM systems, 3D models, measurement equipment, drawings, and sketches to produce high-precision components and assemblies. They also advise research teams on design and fabrication, share machining expertise, and maintain strict safety practices in a hazardous shop environment.
