About The Position

The Machinist will efficiently, effectively and precisely operate conventional machining equipment (Mill, Lathe, horizontal and vertical Hone, Lap, Centreless Grinder, Universal Cylindrical Grinder, Surface Grinder, J1G Grinder, Heat Treat Furnaces, other hand tools and all future machines) to produce die components, machine and tool renewal parts, fixturing, assembly and repairs of injection unit assemblies.

Requirements

  • Certificate of Qualification as a Machinist; OR Minimum Grade 12; AND Minimum of eight (8) years' trade-related precision (+/- .0002", .005mm) machining experience, preferably within an ISO certified manufacturing environment; OR 2 year Mechanical Engineering Technician Diploma; AND Minimum of three (3) years' trade-related precision (+/- .0002", .005mm) machining experience preferably within an ISO certified manufacturing environment.
  • Intermediate level blueprint, engineering drawings reading and interpretation.
  • Proficiency and working knowledge of workshop/machining practices/procedures governing all phases of job specific machine/equipment operation.
  • Intermediate level working knowledge of trigonometry and mathematical functions/calculations.
  • Ability to use and complete conversions in both metric and imperial measurement systems.

Responsibilities

  • Operating required machining equipment to produce components, machine and tool renewal parts, and fixturing, and assemble and repair all injection unit assemblies to print specifications and tolerances, to meet production needs and customer delivery commitments.
  • Thoroughly review Engineering drawings and sketches/blueprints, identify and obtain type of material, manufacturing method, required dimensions, specific sizes and tolerances, and determine if estimate can be achieved.
  • Calculate work piece set-up to achieve design features, and determine machine parameters required to achieve maximum metal removal, best possible finish, and size and tool life.
  • Stage work piece, establish the zero datum point to set the tool, and machine through the various stages and operations.
  • Visually inspect and use appropriate measuring tools at various stages of machining process to ensure dimensional compliance, document data, input work hours into system to close, and physically move the product to the next operation/station, as required.
  • Consult with the Toolmaker/Designer/Engineering and/or Supervisor to resolve machining/operations issues identified that may impact quality part production, revise set-up and machining programs as required, and identify and document modifications to improve productivity, reliability and safety of the product or process.
  • Make, grind, dress and sharpen any special tool bits, tool bits, cutters, boring tools, etc. as required for odd shapes and special applications.
  • Notify Planners or Program Managers of issues regarding meeting timelines and identified priorities.
  • To perform miscellaneous routine operations and Preventative Maintenance (P.M.) functions to support efficient machine and department operations.
  • Make gauges and fixtures as required.
  • Suggest, implement and document modifications to improve productivity, reliability and safety of component/part manufacturing.
  • Clean and organize department/shop equipment, complete P.M. activities, and ensure documentation of completed activities.
  • Stamp and clean new die parts.
  • Complete basic clerical duties as required.
