About The Position

The Machinist Mechanic performs skilled mechanical maintenance and repair work in the water resource recovery and collection system facilities; sets up and operates a variety of machine tools used in fabricating repair parts and fittings; and performs related work as required. This role is with the Metropolitan Council Environmental Services (MCES), a leader in the wastewater industry, dedicated to protecting the environment and serving the Twin Cities metropolitan region.

Requirements

Completion of a four-year State Indentured Machinist Apprenticeship program AND two years of journey-level machinist experience.
A valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Candidates must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within six months of hire if not already obtained.
Knowledge of the methods, practices, procedures and tools used in completing major repairs, maintenance, and overhaul of mechanical equipment and component systems in water resource recovery and collection facilities such as pumps, valves, and pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
Knowledge of the proper use of general mechanical repair and metal working tools and equipment.
Knowledge of safety procedures including Lock Out/Tag Out.
Skill in using the standard hand and power tools and measuring devices of the trade.
Skill in keeping accurate maintenance records and making sketches and layouts.
Skill is reading and interpreting mechanical drawings and specifications.
Basic computer skills with the ability to perform basic tasks such as complete electronic time sheets, process work orders, complete on-line safety training, etc.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to work with wood and building structures.
Ability to read and comprehend instructions independently and in a team setting.
Ability to operate a variety of machine shop equipment such as lathes, grinders, shapers, planners, saws, and torches.
Ability to perform shop mathematics.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Nice To Haves

Journey-level machinist experience in a water resource recovery facility/collection system or a heavy industrial environment, preferably five or more years.
Experience working with complex wastewater collection and conveyance systems serving a metropolitan area.
Carry a Class A CDL.
Experience operating boom trucks, including lifting, rigging, and material handling.

Responsibilities

Performs complete installation of mechanical equipment including setting, grouting, connecting, aligning, and testing per the manufacturer's specifications.
Performs precision alignment and balancing of rotating equipment (pumps, fans, compressors, blowers, etc.).
Fabricates parts and assembles for installation, including necessary soldering, brazing, and welding of component parts.
Performs precision machining, including turning, grinding, milling, etc., using standard machine shop equipment.
Identifies and implements design modifications to mechanical equipment to improve performance, reliability and efficiency.
Performs equipment rigging, lifting, and setting.
Operates equipment including forklifts, aerial platform lifts, hoists, cranes, etc.
Performs other duties as assigned.
