About The Position

The Machinist Mechanic constructs and repairs production machines and parts using prints, sketches, or damaged parts while maintaining close tolerances. The role involves dismantling and assembling machines, selecting and operating metalworking machines, using precision measuring and gauging equipment, machining parts, providing emergency production tooling, and gauging or disassembling bearings when normal assembly equipment is not involved. The employee is required to join the local UAW union. The position receives machine-repair assignments from a supervisor, diagnoses repair needs, removes and replaces defective components, and repairs or replaces internal and external Heat Treat Furnace equipment, including load/unload systems and internal cells. It also involves manufacturing and repairing parts to specification, collaborating with engineering and operators, testing repaired machines, and performing welding, plumbing, pump work, machine-way scraping, cleaning, and maintenance. The role may also support lean manufacturing and continuous-improvement initiatives, including training and facilitating activities, auditing results, and developing recognition programs. Work may take place inside and outside. Physical demands include stooping, climbing, lifting, walking, using hoists, rollers and hand trucks, accessing ladders and aerial platforms, and entering confined spaces. Surface cuts are a possible hazard; pertinent safety equipment includes hearing protection, safety glasses, gloves, and respiratory protection.

Responsibilities

Construct and repair production machines and parts from prints, sketches, or damaged parts while maintaining close tolerances.
Dismantle and assemble machines as necessary.
Select, set up, and operate metalworking machines using precision measuring and gauging equipment.
Machine parts from prints or sketches and provide emergency production tooling as required.
Gauge bearings and disassemble them when normal assembly equipment is not involved.
Receive assignments from a supervisor and obtain relevant manufacturer prints, engineering sketches, or drawings.
Remove defective or worn parts at machine locations or disassemble machines in the Machine Shop for general overhauls.
Repair or replace internal components related to Heat Treat Furnace equipment, including internal and external load/unload systems and internal cells.
Determine the extent of repairs needed and decide whether parts should be repaired or replaced, with supervisor assistance.
Obtain required materials, fixtures, and tools; set up metalworking machines to make or repair parts to specifications.
Form and sharpen tools required to process parts.
Work with engineering and operators to determine speeds and feeds based on material, operation, stock removal, and finish requirements.
Position tools and workpieces, operate machines, and measure work at intervals to ensure specified dimensions and tolerances.
Reassemble machines and test repair accuracy by observing starting, running, and stopping cycles.
Remove, repair, or replace machine-mounted pumps.
Make and install special equipment or adapt production machines according to Engineering Department instructions and specifications.
Perform electric arc welding (MIG, TIG, Stick) and plumbing as part of machine repair or modification.
Work with outside machine-repair technicians to resolve machine issues.
Clean and lubricate machines after use; hand-scrape machine ways; and clean and maintain personal work areas and the department.
Perform other duties as assigned.
When assigned to support additional initiatives, focus on defined achievement levels, drive lean manufacturing initiatives and cultural change, train and facilitate continuous-improvement activities, audit achievements, and develop recognition programs.
