Sets up and operates various types of lathes to machine complex parts to exacting tolerances, requiring ingenuity and a thorough knowledge of machine shop theory, machine capacity, and material machinability. Plans machining sequences, devises machining methods, and adapts tooling to minimize setups and machining time. Performs rework of similar complexity. Makes complete layouts on parts for machining. Determines and adjusts speeds, feeds, and depth of cut; selects, mounts, and aligns tooling, attachments, and materials. Performs operations such as turning, profile turning, boring, reaming, grooving, chamfering, tapping, chasing threads, turning tapers, and machining angles, radii, and complex surfaces. Grinds own tool bits and drills as needed. Must be able to work any shift.
