This specific position focuses on machining and fabricating tooling, parts, assemblies, guarding, and jigs/fixtures for production equipment supporting sustainable solutions. The role involves creating new components, modifying existing ones, and repairing manufacturing components to support internal groups such as Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, Quality, and Facilities. The Machinist II will also play an active role in investigating component failures, problem-solving, and developing sustainable solutions, with all activities aimed at achieving plant goals for safety, quality, schedule, and cost.

Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree in Tool Trade or Machinist Curriculum, or High School Diploma/GED plus experience acquired through a formal Journeyman apprenticeship in tool making or equivalent.
  • 7–10+ years of experience in machine shop, tool and die making, or industrial maintenance required.
  • Ability to machine and fabricate using FDA-compliant materials like stainless steel, aluminum, and acetal.
  • Ability to compute simple math and geometry/trigonometry formulas.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to stand 8 hours per shift.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds frequently and 65 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to respond to occasional off-hours support calls during the week.
  • Ability to support an on-call weekend rotation.

  • Experience acquired through a formal Journeyman apprenticeship in tool making or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Machine and fabricate tooling, parts, assemblies, guarding, and jigs/fixtures for production equipment for sustainable solutions.
  • Make new, modify, and repair manufacturing components.
  • Support all internal groups: Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, Quality, and Facilities.
  • Take an active role in component failure investigation, problem solving, and creating sustainable solutions.
  • Set up and operate machine tools such as manual machining equipment (lathes, mills), manual surface grinder, heat treat oven, welder, sheet metal shear and brake to machine or fabricate parts, using hand tools as needed to fit and assemble parts.
  • Machine, alter, and repair components to needed specifications from blueprints, old/worn/broken parts, models, hand sketches, or verbal description.
  • Advise on design improvements, either geometric or material, to achieve desired benefits.
  • Determine machining sequence of operation to complete job tasks in a timely manner and meet tolerance requirements with available equipment and tools.
  • Compute dimension measurements using hand calculations, calculator, or programs such as CAD (DraftSight, SolidWorks), using plan layouts to determine assembly methods and sequence of operations.
  • Machine and fabricate using FDA-compliant materials like stainless steel, aluminum, and acetal.
  • Utilize material on hand or request material to be ordered for the project; lay out the component with standard practices including measuring, marking, and scribing materials for machining.
  • Verify dimensions, clearances, and alignment using measuring devices such as dial indicators, gauge blocks, thickness gages, and micrometers to ensure desired precision fit for equipment, assemblies, or components.
  • Work with setup and manufacturing engineers or technicians to troubleshoot component root cause failure, outline a sustainable repair/replacement path, and make critical repairs to release equipment back to an operating state.
  • Perform predictive/preventive maintenance and assist with updating the predictive and preventative maintenance program.
  • Assist project completion with component modifications or custom guarding for new equipment installations to meet equipment validation requirements and timeline.
  • Document, by methods of hand sketches (using standard views) or redlining the prints, the “as-built” state of the component and provide Engineering if modifications were required.
  • Document, organize, and label new tooling, jigs, and fixtures.
  • Document daily work logs and track time using Maximo software.
  • Maintain shop cleanliness in daily and weekly cleanups.
  • Request material or tooling when needed to maintain stock inventory of the machine shop.
  • Support team collaboration and cross training of peers on systems responsible to maintain, ensuring redundancy (operation/minor troubleshooting) in the Machine Shop Group.
  • Perform work in compliance with all national and local codes.
  • Support an on-call weekend rotation and respond to occasional off-hours support calls during the week for hard-down equipment.
  • Respond to occasional off-hours support calls during the week.
