About The Position

Sierra Lobo is hiring a Machinist A for the Technical Services Department at NASA’s White Sands Test Facility (WSTF). Sierra Lobo provides professional and technical capabilities in Test and Evaluation, Systems Engineering, and Advanced Technologies, and develops products and processes related to cryogenic fluid and thermal management, densified propellant management, and prototype extreme-pressure and temperature systems. Its customers include the Department of Defense, the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, Missile Defense Agency, and NASA.

The Machinist A performs machinist tasks, including interpreting blueprints and sketches, developing sketches from supplied parts when needed, detailed layout work, and equipment setup. The role operates common machine-shop equipment and produces work consistently within specified tolerances, while following safety requirements and working independently or as part of a team.

Requirements

• Meet all requirements for Machinist B (Job Code 4848).
• Have two additional years of experience beyond the Machinist B requirements, for a total of seven years of machine-shop experience, applicable trade-school experience, or a combination of both.
• Pass the Machinist A machine-part qualification test before hire or promotion.
• Be a U.S. citizen.
• Possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
• Pass a physical examination according to WSTF physical examination requirements for the job classification.
• Have basic computer skills.
• Meet certification requirements, if applicable, as specified in the White Sands Training Database (WTDB).

Responsibilities

• Maintain and demonstrate a safety-first approach toward personal and coworker safety.
• Perform machinist tasks, including reading and interpreting complicated blueprints and sketches and developing sketches from supplied parts when necessary.
• Perform detailed layout work and equipment setups under limited supervision from senior shop personnel or management.
• Safely operate saws, lathes, mills, drill presses, and bench grinders, maintaining tolerances of ±0.003 inch consistently.
• Work individually or as part of a team to complete assigned tasks.
• Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and immediately communicate safety concerns to management.
