The Machinist sets up conventional and/or CNC machines to produce precision parts and instruments, applying knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures. The role includes inspecting precision parts to verify they meet print specifications. Through on-the-job training, the Machinist learns to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and work orders; set up and operate machining, grinding, polishing, centering, and inspection equipment; and operate coordinate measuring machines and other advanced testing equipment. Equipment and tolerances include lathes and horizontal and vertical mills to .001-inch tolerance, CNC multi-axis machining centers to .0005-inch tolerance, and precision grinding to .001 µm (.00005-inch) tolerance. Advancement through the Machinist ranks is based on increasing education, experience, industrial and math skills, computing skills, responsibility, and leadership potential and effectiveness. This position works in a manufacturing environment and may be assigned to various production areas. The environment can range from quiet to loud, may involve oils and solvents, and regularly includes exposure to moving mechanical parts and fumes. The employee generally works in and helps maintain a clean environment; area-specific safety training may be required. Optimax describes its culture as dynamic, collaborative, innovative, and team-oriented, producing optics for aerospace, defense, and consumer electronics applications.
