About The Position

Elemental Brands is seeking a highly skilled, hands-on Machine Shop Supervisor to lead their production team and contribute to the creation of high-performance custom lighting fixtures. This role involves setting up a new machine shop and paint booth, requiring direct operational involvement and leadership on the shop floor. The supervisor will commission fabrication facilities including laser cutters, turret punches, press brakes, CNC machines, welding equipment, and a painting facility. Once operational, they will work alongside the team to meet production goals, acting as an expert in sheet metal fabrication to optimize designs for minimal scrap and maximum throughput. Responsibilities also include hiring, training, mentoring, and ensuring a safe work environment with strict adherence to safety standards, machine guarding, and PPE compliance. This is a working supervisor role focused on craftsmanship, continuous improvement, and leading by example.

Requirements

  • Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of experience in a machine shop or metal fabrication environment required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of direct supervisory experience required.
  • Strong working knowledge of sheet metal fabrication equipment, part sequencing, and design principles is required.
  • Familiarity with welding operations and surface/paint preparation standards (with a willingness to be hands-on in a paint booth environment).
  • Experience with modern MRP/ERP systems in a manufacturing environment.
  • MS Office (Word, Excel), FedEx, UPS, and USPS software systems.
  • Ability to learn extensive product lines, including basic product understanding of high-performance linear lighting, custom luminaire systems, light engines, low voltage installations, and power supplies.
  • Ability to safely operate and train team members on the effective use of machine shop machinery, sheet metal fabrication equipment, welding apparatus, paint booth systems, power tools, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Must possess mobility to work in a standard warehouse setting and work with and around a variety of equipment, parts, and inventory, to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and lead manufacturing operations of customized LED components, light engines, and linear lighting fixtures.
  • Ensure workforce follows established procedures and work instructions across fabrication, welding, and paint operations.
  • Own the sequencing of sheet metal fabrication processes, ensuring fixture designs align with shop capabilities and maximizing throughput.
  • Remove bottlenecks in day-to-day operations with viable solutions.
  • Qualitatively monitor workforce productivity.
  • Manage and maintain essential production consumables, including ordering supplies for the machine shop and paint booth.
  • Support inter-site manufacturing efforts through active involvement at the San Dimas facility.
  • Audit and document manufacturing processes within the Reno and San Dimas machine shops and painting booths to standardize operations.
  • Provide direct, hands-on support in operating the machine shop and painting booth at the San Dimas location to support production demands.
  • Ensure all facilities operations align with corporate quality, safety, and efficiency benchmarks.
  • Act as a hands-on "working supervisor," directly operating machinery, fabricating parts, and welding components alongside the production team to meet daily output goals.
  • Perform hands-on surface preparation and operate paint booth equipment (including spraying and finishing) to maintain production schedules and ensure cosmetic standards are met.
  • Directly operate and troubleshoot machine shop and sheet metal equipment (e.g., press brakes, mills, saws) daily to support workflow and remove physical bottlenecks.
  • Recruit, hire, train, evaluate, develop, coach, and lead staff.
  • Enhance the working environment through employee engagement, results, and accountability.
  • Evaluate human capital and material resource requirements and provide recommendations and enhancements.
  • Serve as a positive role model for department personnel.
  • Maintain a strong floor presence and lead by example.
  • Coordinate efforts with Production Leadership, assisting with establishing priorities and sequences for manufacturing customized products.
  • Meet or exceed planned production goals by utilizing production schedules and establishing priorities of the department.
  • Create reports and provide feedback on team productivity and project schedule status.
  • Provide input on productivity improvements and ensure production schedules are met.
  • Ensure product quality is met within the department in accordance with quality control and product development standards.
  • Evaluate in-process raw material and finished goods for conformity to established standards and specifications.
  • Monitor product standards and discuss quality control programs for custom projects.
  • Report the progress of the Machining/Fabrication team towards established quality goals and suggest improvements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional departments to identify project milestones and critical areas of concern to ensure customer requirements are fulfilled in relation to quality and delivery.
  • Create positive working relationships and involve others in working collectively toward achievement of departmental and company goals.
  • Communicate effectively on the status of needed parts or anticipated future needs required to produce upcoming products.
  • Promote company goals, policies, processes, practices, and documentation for all customized products.
  • Ensure all personnel adhere to proper machine guarding, PPE usage, and safe chemical/material handling practices across machining, fabrication, welding, and painting operations.
  • Detect, correct, and report any unsafe work practices or violations of company rules and procedures.
  • Monitor production processes, adjusting schedules as needed.
  • Develop or revise standard operational and working practices.
  • Observe and correct workers to ensure compliance with company standards and achievement of performance expectations.
