About The Position

The Machine Setup Operator is responsible for operating and setting up various machines to ensure parts are fabricated within specifications. This role involves loading and unloading materials, performing maintenance checks, adjusting machine settings, and inspecting parts using various tools. The operator will also be responsible for reading CNC programs, identifying and building tooling, and potentially training other employees. This position requires attention to detail, adherence to quality and safety procedures, and the ability to troubleshoot problems.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to present numerical data effectively and write routine correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively to communicate with other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as decimals, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
  • Ability to interpret bar and line graphs.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to identify problems in a timely manner and resolve or notify a more senior employee.

  • Possess basic computer skills.
  • Regularly required to stand and use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
  • Frequently required to walk and reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally required to sit.
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision and depth perception.

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Multitasking machine set-up experience a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Operate machines by loading starting material and unloading machined parts.
  • Deburr parts as necessary for inspection and safety.
  • Perform daily housekeeping around the machine and daily maintenance checks.
  • Adjust tool offsets and other machine offsets (e.g., fixture offsets, cutter compensation).
  • Install and align holding fixtures and accessories on machines for non-complex machining operations.
  • Align and secure cutting tools into tool holders and install tool assemblies on machines.
  • Retrieve CNC programs, ensure correct revision, and download to the machine.
  • Establish machining offsets (G54, etc.).
  • Start and observe machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjust set-up as required.
  • Document results and get first-piece stamp for operation.
  • Recognize and address tool wear by adjusting tool offsets as necessary.
  • Identify and build tooling according to the tool sheet and establish tool heights.
  • Identify the correct tool versus the tool sheet and change the tool in the machine.
  • Read CNC programs line-by-line to follow tool paths.
  • Use standard hand tools (e.g., vernier calipers, micrometers) and specialty inspection devices to ensure parts are fabricated within specifications.
  • Load parts onto the Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) and operate it to ensure parts are fabricated within specifications.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and quality plans to understand inspection requirements.
  • Fill out Quality System paperwork and enter data into the computer as necessary.
  • Operate more than one machine at the same time, as required.
  • Train other employees on the basics of operating equipment on which the employee is fully competent.
  • Notify more senior machining employees, engineers, or supervisors when problems arise.
