About The Position

This co-op position offers a unique opportunity to work closely with an experienced carpenter, assisting in various aspects of carpentry work. The role involves learning and applying skills in planning, measuring, cutting, shaping materials, and supporting the construction, repair, and installation of building fixtures and structures. The trainee will also contribute to maintaining a safe and organized work environment using 5S principles and assist with the setup and basic care of tools and equipment. Adherence to all safety standards and procedures, including the use of PPE and fall protection, is paramount. This role is designed for individuals currently enrolled in a vocational technical high school carpentry or construction trades program, providing hands-on experience in an industrial or facilities setting.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a Vocational Technical High School (at end of junior year).
  • Currently enrolled in a carpentry or construction trades program.
  • Demonstrated hands-on carpentry experience or coursework (e.g., framing, basic finishing, reading a tape measure, safe use of basic power tools).
  • Ability to read tape measures and use basic shop math for measurement and layout.
  • Ability to lift, move, and manipulate materials and fixtures up to 25 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Ability to work in a shop and plant environment, including standing, bending, working from ladders or platforms, and working in confined areas with appropriate supervision and PPE.
  • Restricted to U.S. persons (i.e., U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and other protected individuals under the Immigration and Naturalization Act, 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) due to access to export-controlled technology.
  • Proof of U.S. person status will be required prior to employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated basic skills in: framing walls, hanging doors, installing doors and windows, hanging sheetrock, and installing countertops and cabinets through school projects or prior experience.
  • Experience or coursework related to working in an industrial, commercial, or facilities environment (vs residential only).
  • Awareness of relevant safety expectations and regulations in an industrial setting (e.g., OSHA basics, ladder safety, lockout/tagout awareness).
  • Demonstrated team player and willingness to learn from experienced carpenters and maintenance staff.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills; able to maintain tools and materials in an orderly manner.
  • Ability to work from and follow written and verbal instructions precisely, including drawings and simple schematics appropriate to a student level.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and interest in troubleshooting and problem-solving.
  • Basic computer skills and willingness to use applications for training, work instructions, and time reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning and laying out carpentry work from drawings, instructions, and blueprints.
  • Assist in measuring, cutting, and shaping wood, plastic, and other materials using a variety of hand tools.
  • Support construction, repair, and installation of building fixtures and structures (e.g., framing walls, hanging doors, installing windows, hanging sheetrock, installing countertops and cabinets, basic tiling).
  • Help maintain work areas using 5S principles (sort, set, shine, standardize, sustain) to ensure safe, organized, and efficient job sites.
  • Assist with setup, use, and basic care of tools and equipment, including checking cords, guards, and safety devices before use.
  • Follow all safety standards and procedures, including PPE use and fall protection, and promptly report unsafe conditions.
  • Work in a team environment with carpenters, maintenance technicians, and other trades to complete assigned tasks on time.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the maintenance and facilities team.
