About The Position

The Lumber Inspector will inspect and grade lumber, railroad ties, plywood, pallets, and other wood products used by the Authority. This role requires experience with lumber grading, wood treatment processes, industry specifications, and testing of wood products.

Requirements

  • Minimum of five years of experience performing inspections or grading in a lumber mill or wholesale lumber business.
  • Experience inspecting railroad ties, plywood, wooden pallets, and various domestic and foreign lumber species.
  • Experience with both hardwood and softwood lumber categories.
  • Familiarity with pressure-treating techniques used to preserve lumber or provide fire-retardant properties.
  • Knowledge of testing methods for wood products.
  • Lumber inspection, lumber grading, railroad tie inspection, plywood inspection, wood treatment knowledge, forestry products, quality control, industry standards, and technical documentation.

Nice To Haves

  • Formal education in forestry products.
  • Experience with hardwoods such as ekki, mora, oak, or southern yellow pine.
  • Familiarity with railroad ties, shoring lumber, slatting lumber, and wooden pallets.
  • Knowledge of applicable industry-wide specifications for grading lumber and plywood.

  • Inspect and grade lumber and wood products.
  • Inspect railroad ties, plywood, wooden pallets, hardwoods, and softwoods.
  • Evaluate pressure treatment, preservation, and fire-retardant treatment methods.
  • Verify compliance with applicable industry standards.
  • Document inspection results and identify nonconforming materials.
  • Support acceptance or rejection recommendations for wood products.
