About The Position

This role involves assisting in the scheduling of procedures and surgeries, coordinating with insurance companies for authorizations, and communicating with patients regarding pre- and post-operative phases. The LPN will also manage pre-operative appointments, inform surgeons of any patient concerns, and assist patients in achieving their health goals by executing the prescribed plan of care. Key responsibilities include maintaining patient privacy, safety, and confidentiality, staying current with medical knowledge, and adapting to changing demands. The position also entails conducting pre-visit preparations, managing the clinic environment (instrument setup, cleaning, ordering supplies, restocking), and performing various clinical duties such as checking vital signs, preparing for physical examinations, verifying prescriptions, handling biohazard waste, performing laboratory procedures (including CLIA-waived tests, venipunctures, specimen handling), administering immunizations and injections, and providing emergency first aid. Additionally, the LPN will monitor vaccine, medication, and laboratory supplies, coordinating with hospital departments as needed. The role also includes clinic stakeholder responsibilities such as effective teamwork, courteous interaction with patients and colleagues, providing constructive feedback, and clinic financial responsibilities like time management, participation in performance improvement activities, efficient resource utilization, and accurate billing. Health information management responsibilities include providing and receiving feedback, improving practice, and ensuring patient confidentiality.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited Practical Nursing program is required.
  • Previous nursing and ambulatory surgery experience
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures related to infection control, environmental safety, pain management, emergency situations, fire safety, performance improvement and patient confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of Electronic Medical chart, Meaningful use reports as well as Performance Improvement reports.
  • Skill in appropriate assessment and assistance techniques applicable to injections.
  • Skill in appropriate use of universal precautions, safe workplace and confidentiality methods.
  • Skill in health information management by appropriately charting patient data.
  • Current NYS licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse is required.
  • Current BLS certification is required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in scheduling procedures/surgeries according to protocol.
  • Assist in contacting insurance companies to obtain appropriate insurance authorizations for all procedures, surgeries, medications, testing as needed.
  • Works closely with patients to communicate any changes and/or concerns during the pre/post-operative phase.
  • Schedule/track pre-operative appointments according to protocol and insurance needs.
  • Inform surgeon of any patient or clinician concerns while in process of scheduling patient for surgery (e.g., hospital pre-op issues, medical clearance issues, etc).
  • Assists patient in the achievement of identified goals by carrying out the prescribed plan of care.
  • Demonstrates patient advocacy by assuring a patient's right to privacy, safety and confidentiality.
  • Maintains current knowledge and skills by participating in relevant educational and training programs.
  • Ability to flexibly respond to changing demands.
  • Conducts pre-visit preparations.
  • Meets environmental responsibilities as assigned that may include setting up instruments and equipment according to department protocols; cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control; ordering, sorting, storing supplies; and restocking exam/procedure rooms.
  • Fulfills clinical responsibilities, which include checking vital signs; physical examination preparations; prescription verifications with physician’s orders; biohazard waste disposal and monitoring; laboratory procedures including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines; quality control methods; CLIA-waived testing; venipunctures; specimen handling such as urine, throat, vaginal, stool, and sputum; EKG testing; completing lab draws; emergency first aid; administering immunizations and injections.
