The Charge Nurse works cooperatively and respectfully with elders, coworkers, families, visitors, and volunteers to create a positive environment in the home. The nurse delivers care according to facility policies and procedures, quality improvement guidelines, and local, state, and federal regulations. The role promotes elders’ opportunities to engage in normal life pursuits and to improve or maintain their functioning. The Charge Nurse participates in elder-centered care and team-based management and is involved in daily activities in assigned households. SEM Haven describes itself as an elder-centered organization focused on elder choice and as a family that includes elders, staff, and their families. The staff member’s role is to support elders with friendship and kindness so they can live as independently as they wish in their homes, treating everyone with respect. As part of the household team, the nurse may also perform tasks within their knowledge and training to maintain household life, such as assisting with food preparation and serving, tidying, removing trash, cleaning spills, transporting elders, attending household meetings or learning circles, and fulfilling simple requests. The position requires the ability to implement and evaluate elder-care programs; patience; listening, verbal, and non-verbal communication skills; interpersonal skills; respect for people and possessions; and flexibility to modify duties for the good of the home and elders. Work in long-term care may involve shift rotation, weekend and holiday duty, unusual or impaired elder behavior, family reactions, death and dying, oversight by state surveyors, ombudsmen and federal officials, consultants and attorneys, and variable involvement of medical staff. Reasonable accommodations will be made in accordance with ADA guidelines for staff members unable to perform essential functions.
