About The Position

The primary purpose of this role is to be responsible for the total care of the residents on your unit during your tour of duty, ensuring compliance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, regulations, and policies to maintain the highest degree of quality care. As Charge Nurse, you are delegated administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary for carrying out assigned duties, working under the direction of the Nursing Supervisor.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an approved RN or LPN program.
  • Current, unencumbered, active license to practice as an RN or LPN in this state.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies, and the general public.
  • Knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to long-term care.
  • Leadership ability and willingness to work harmoniously with professional and non-professional personnel.
  • Ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
  • Patience, tact, a cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm.
  • Willingness to handle difficult residents.
  • Willingness to seek out new methods and principles and incorporate them into existing nursing practices.
  • Ability to relate information concerning a resident's condition.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the day-to-day functions of the nursing activities in accordance with current policies, rules, regulations, and guidelines.
  • Assist in developing methods for coordinating nursing services with other resident services.
  • Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, and charting.
  • Recommend written material to assist the Nursing Services Department.
  • Assist in planning the nursing services portion of the resident's discharge plan.
  • Participate in surveys (inspections) made by authorized agencies.
  • Make written and oral reports/recommendations to the Director concerning the operation of the Nursing Services Department.
  • Interpret department policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies.
  • Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as required.
  • Complete accident/incident reports as necessary.
  • Maintain assigned area to meet all safety standards.
  • Attend various committee meetings of the facility as required.
  • Assist in preparing written and/or oral reports of nursing service programs and activities for committees.
  • Assist in the orientation of newly assigned personnel.
  • Develop work assignments and/or assist CNAs in completing tasks.
  • Delegate administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability to CNAs.
  • Make daily rounds of the nursing unit to ensure CNAs are performing work assignments correctly.
  • Ensure disciplinary action is administered fairly.
  • Develop and maintain good working rapport with inter-departmental personnel.
  • Ensure department personnel, residents, and visitors follow established policies and procedures.
  • Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment.
  • Meet with your shift on a regularly scheduled basis to identify and correct problem areas.
  • Participate in determining staffing requirements, employee performance evaluations, and making recommendations to the Supervisor.
  • Inform CNAs of new admissions, their expected arrival time, and room assignment.
  • Greet newly admitted residents and escort them to their rooms.
  • Review nurses' notes for completeness and accuracy.
  • Make rounds with physicians as necessary.
  • Encourage physicians to record and sign progress notes and orders timely.
  • Make daily resident visits to observe and evaluate physical and emotional status.
  • Ensure medications are administered as ordered and treatments are provided as scheduled.
  • Review medication and treatment kardexes for accuracy and adherence to policies.
  • Provide direct nursing care as necessary.
  • Report problem areas to the Supervisor and assist in developing corrective action.
  • Keep the Supervisor informed of resident status and other matters through reports.
  • Meet with residents and/or family members as necessary.
  • Participate in Resident Care Conferences and implement recommendations.
  • Ensure residents who are unable to call for help are checked frequently.
  • Notify the attending physician and next-of-kin of changes in resident condition.
  • Assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.
  • Receive and give report to other nurses and CNAs at change of shift.
  • Work with facility consultants and implement changes with supervisor assistance.
  • Ensure a stock level of medications, medical supplies, and equipment is maintained.
  • Make independent decisions concerning nursing care.
  • Consult Supervisor as needed.
  • Schedule lab tests as ordered.
  • Inform family members of resident's death as necessary.
  • Call funeral homes as necessary.
  • Perform CPR and emergency medical treatment.
  • Participate in in-service training classes.
  • Monitor CNA performance during orientation.
  • Inform Supervisor and Staff Development Director of the need for additional training.
  • Attend and participate in continuing educational programs.
  • Complete mandatory education as assigned.
  • Assist in developing and ensuring compliance with safety standards for the Nursing Department.
  • Monitor personnel to assure adherence to safety regulations.
  • Ensure work areas and resident rooms are clean and sanitary.
  • Ensure nursing personnel participate in fire safety and disaster preparedness drills.
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of procedures for reporting hazardous conditions or equipment.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and maintenance of the infection control program.
  • Ensure nursing personnel follow established hand washing techniques.
  • Participate in the development of a written plan of care for each resident.
  • Encourage resident participation in the development and review of their care plan.
  • Review resident care plans for appropriate goals, problems, approaches, and revisions.
  • Ensure all personnel are aware of the care plan and use it in daily care.
  • Review nurses' notes to determine if the care plan is being followed.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all resident care information.
  • Monitor nursing care to ensure residents are treated fairly and with dignity and respect.
  • Ensure privacy during care and that personnel knock before entering rooms.
  • Ensure personnel are knowledgeable of residents' rights and responsibilities.
  • Review complaints and grievances and report actions taken.
  • Ensure staff honor resident's refusal of treatment requests.
  • Correctly use all necessary equipment for the position.
  • Correctly use facility equipment.
  • Operate all equipment in a safe manner.
  • Use only necessary equipment and supplies.
  • Assist the Infection Control Coordinator in identifying potential exposure risks.
  • Assure personnel follow procedures for personal protective equipment.
  • Participate in weekend on-call when designated.
