Requirements

  • Graduate from a Licensed Practical Nursing program.
  • Currently licensed as a Practical Nurse in the state of employment.
  • Possesses an active CPR certification.
  • Remains knowledgeable about specific state laws and regulations governing practice.
  • Satisfactory completion of initial and annual clinical competencies to demonstrate aptitude as assigned by role.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records for patients receiving specialized care, documenting medical histories, test results, treatment plans, and communication with external healthcare providers.
  • Act as a liaison between the correctional facility's medical team and external healthcare providers, communicating medical needs, coordinating information exchange, and ensuring seamless collaboration for patients' medical care.
  • Conduct initial health assessments for newly arrived patients, gathering medical histories, assessing current health status, and identifying any immediate medical needs or concerns.
  • Administer medications to patients as prescribed by the facility's medical staff, ensuring proper dosages, documenting medication administration, and monitoring inmates for any adverse reactions.
  • Provide basic health education to patients, covering topics such as hygiene, medication management, and preventive care, helping inmates understand their medical conditions and treatment plans.
  • Respond quickly and provide immediate care in the event of a medical emergency, assisting with CPR, administering first aid, and helping stabilize the situation until higher-level medical personnel arrive.
  • Perform wound care, including cleaning, dressing, and monitoring the healing progress of wounds or injuries.
  • Regularly monitor patients' vital signs, such as blood pressure, pulse, and temperature, tracking any changes and reporting abnormal findings to the medical team.
  • Conduct routine health assessments, screenings, and health promotion activities for inmates, which can include providing vaccinations, conducting tuberculosis (TB) screenings, and promoting overall well-being.
  • Accurately document all medical interactions, assessments, treatments, and interventions to ensure continuity of care and compliance with medical protocols.
  • Collaborate with other members of the medical team, including registered nurses, physicians, and mental health professionals, to provide comprehensive healthcare services to inmates.
  • Dispense prescribed medications and ensure that inmates receive the correct doses at the appropriate times.
  • Manage and organize medication supplies, ensuring that medications are available, properly labeled, and securely stored.
  • Perform administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, maintaining records, and coordinating with external healthcare providers.
