About The Position

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) on Cleveland Clinic’s Medicine Preoperative Assessment Clinic (MPAC) team assists fellow caregivers in providing patient-first nursing care to a diverse patient population. The clinic optimizes patients for surgery by assessing medical risks, evaluating chronic health conditions, modifying medications, and performing appropriate tests to minimize complications during and immediately after surgery. The position provides hands-on nursing experience and access to educational resources within the Cleveland Clinic system. The caregiver works days from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Essential duties include assessing, planning, coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating patient progress throughout the continuum of care in conjunction with an RN or physician. The work involves frequent walking, sitting, standing, talking, listening, and phone use, with occasional computer use. It is physically heavy and involves constant lifting and moving of patients and carrying equipment and supplies up to 50 pounds without assistance, or more than 50 pounds with mechanical devices or help from other personnel. The caregiver may stoop, push, pull, reach, handle, feel, and manipulate equipment. Work is primarily indoors in air-conditioned areas, with significant potential exposure to blood and blood-borne pathogens. Personal protective equipment is required as appropriate.

Requirements

Graduate of an accredited Practical or Vocational Nursing Program.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
Current Florida licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
Experience with technology.
Computer literacy.
Knowledge of infection control practices.

Complete authorization forms and laboratory requisitions.
Perform pain management assessments and document them.
Recognize changes in patients’ status and report pertinent information to the Charge Nurse or physicians.
Educate patients, families, and others.
Adhere to National Patient Safety Goals as outlined by JCAHO.
Follow Code Blue protocol.
Assess, plan, coordinate, monitor, and evaluate patient progress through the continuum of care in conjunction with an RN or physician.
Follow Standard Precautions and use required personal protective equipment.
