2027 Low Observables Engineer Intern

Anduril•Costa Mesa, CA
•Onsite

About The Position

The Air Dominance and Strike Low Observable Team advances low-observable technology to improve the survivability and effectiveness of unmanned air systems. The team designs, analyzes, tests, and sustains stealth features that reduce radar cross-section (RCS) and infrared signatures. This internship is for engineers pursuing a degree in aerospace, electrical, mechanical engineering, or a related field. Low-observables engineering combines air-vehicle geometry, electromagnetic behavior, and materials and manufacturing processes. Prior stealth experience is not required; the team will teach role-specific methods. Interns will work with an LO engineer on a scoped project supporting a live program and are expected to bring strong engineering fundamentals, willingness to learn unfamiliar analysis tools, and sound judgment in evaluating results. The role is an in-person, 12-week internship in summer 2027 at one of the company’s offices. Interns must return to school after the internship for at least one quarter or semester. The role requires U.S. Person status because of access to export-controlled information or facilities; U.S. clearance eligibility may be required depending on the program. The listed hourly salary range is $34–$50 USD. The description also notes that highly competitive equity grants are included in the majority of full-time offers and that full-time employees receive benefits; it does not specify those as intern benefits.

Requirements

  • Be pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field.
  • Return to school after the internship to continue academic studies for at least one quarter or semester.
  • Be a U.S. Person due to required access to U.S. export-controlled information or facilities; U.S. clearance eligibility may be required depending on the program.
  • Be able to complete an in-person 12-week internship in summer 2027 at one of the company’s offices.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework in at least one of electromagnetics or RF, aircraft or vehicle design, or materials and manufacturing processes.
  • Working knowledge of a scripting or analysis language such as MATLAB, Python, or C++.
  • Familiarity with a 3D CAD package such as NX, CATIA, SolidWorks, or Creo.
  • Demonstrated hands-on engineering work through a capstone or senior design project, internship, undergraduate research, or student competition team.
  • Ability to explain a technical result clearly in writing and in a design review.
  • Exposure to an electromagnetic simulation tool such as HFSS, CST, FEKO, or COMSOL; experience with X-Patch, SENTRi, and McMoM2D is not expected.
  • Coursework or project experience with composites, additive manufacturing, casting, or injection molding.
  • Experience with laboratory RF measurement, such as network analyzers, anechoic chambers, or antenna pattern measurement.
  • Experience reducing, visualizing, and sanity-checking measured data sets.
  • A prior internship or co-op in aerospace, defense, or another hardware-heavy environment.

Responsibilities

  • Run broadband radar cross-section (RCS) analysis on components and full air vehicles and assess the reliability of predictions.
  • Support the design and development of low-observable unmanned air systems, from early configuration trades through detailed design.
  • Build and improve analysis tools, scripts, and validation workflows.
  • Model low-observable materials and treatments and help select and optimize them for specific components.
  • Support manufacturing and validation planning, including tolerances, inspection methods, and producibility at rate.
  • Help plan and execute RCS measurement campaigns in indoor chambers and on outdoor ranges, and reduce and interpret the data.
  • Compare measured results with predictions, investigate discrepancies, and feed findings back into models.
