About The Position

Blackstone Valley Prep (BVP) Mayoral Academy is hiring a Long Term Substitute Science Teacher for the 2026-2027 school year, expected to last until mid-January 2027. BVP is a network of tuition-free public charter schools committed to providing a high-quality education and preparing scholars for college and beyond. Successful candidates will understand and advocate for equity in education and be dedicated to scholar success. The role involves fostering an inclusive and equitable school community, cultivating scholars' social and personal skills, engaging in professional growth, acting ethically, partnering with families, and attending mandatory professional development and family events.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree is required
  • Successful applicants must hold an appropriate Rhode Island teacher certification by their date of hire.
  • Certification in relevant coursework
  • CPI certification

Nice To Haves

  • A minimum of two years teaching experience in a diverse public school setting preferred, but not required
  • Bilingual candidates preferred, but not required
  • If required for your role, you must provide evidence of proficiency or awareness in the knowledge and practices of the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy through the completion of a RIDE approved program or Rhode Island educator preparation program.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize Next Generation Science Standards to deliver cross-cutting lessons in physical science, earth and space science, life science, and engineering
  • Encourage and develop scholars’ use of scientific inquiry to understand core concepts
  • Create an environment of respect and rapport
  • Collaborate with team members for planning and reflective practice
  • Establish a culture of learning that reflects the educational importance of the work undertaken by both scholars and teachers
  • Establish and monitor routines and procedures for the smooth operation of the classroom and the efficient use of time, and the engagement with learning
  • Model a precise and expressive use of language to effectively communicate with scholars, including: expectations for learning, directions for activities, and explanations of content
  • Use questions, prompts, and discussion techniques to cognitively challenge scholars, advance high-level thinking and discourse, and promote metacognition
  • Intellectually engage all scholars in learning through well-designed learning tasks and activities that require complex thinking, and include appropriate scaffolding
  • Utilize formative and summative assessments to drive instructional planning, monitor scholar learning, provide feedback to scholars, and facilitate scholars’ self-monitoring of learning
