About The Position

Works under general supervision to perform specific duties in maintaining all locking devices of the Shelby County Division of Corrections. This role involves maintaining and repairing all locking doors and devices in secured areas, conducting preventive maintenance, determining causes of damage, managing parts inventory, performing or supervising repairs, disassembling and replacing parts, training personnel on lock operation, cutting keys, and maintaining records and blueprints.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of experience as a locksmith
  • High school diploma or possess a GED
  • Completion of a trade school in locksmith or specific training courses in locks
  • Must possess a valid Tennessee driver’s license or secure one by date of employment
  • Must be able to work in a jail secured environment
  • Must pass a drug test
  • Must participate in annual in-service and other training programs as required
  • Must be a resident of Shelby County (or meet exemption criteria)

  • Knowledge of tools and implements need in repair of locks.
  • Knowledge of practices, methods, and materials required for the maintenance of locking equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing to personnel in prison, management, and others.
  • Ability to read blueprints and related technical documents.
  • Ability to analyze malfunctions of equipment and skills in performing necessary repairs.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and keeps in operation all locking doors and locking devices in the secured areas of the SCDC.
  • Makes inspections of all locking devices to determine needed preventive maintenance on a scheduled basis.
  • Makes determinations to cause locking device damage.
  • Keeps inventory of all necessary parts for repairs of locking equipment.
  • Makes or supervises all necessary repairs to locking devices.
  • Disassembles, repairs, or replaces worn tumbler springs and/or other parts.
  • Trains and instructs appropriate personnel in proper operation of locking devices.
  • Cuts new or duplicate keys.
  • Keeps records and blueprints of jail facility and schedules of lock checks and other related records.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.
