About The Position

The Omaha World-Herald is seeking an ambitious, versatile, and energetic journalist to join their award-winning team. This role involves covering the robust sports scene in a major metropolitan area, with a focus on high school sports (especially volleyball and basketball) and timely stories on college and professional sports. The position offers the opportunity to blend structured coverage of high school sports with the pursuit of engaging feature stories that go beyond the field of play, especially for teams experiencing successful seasons. The Omaha market is rich with sports, including the College World Series, professional volleyball teams, a Triple-A baseball team, a USL men's soccer team, and college hockey.

Requirements

  • At least three years of relevant experience writing, reporting, and source-building in sports.
  • Comfort talking in front of a microphone or camera in various capacities.
  • Adaptability and versatility for feature stories as they emerge.
  • Comfort working with digital audience metrics.
  • An upbeat approach to growing The World-Herald’s reach and strengthening its engagement with subscribers.
  • A relentless desire to innovate, experiment, and help chart the newsroom’s next phase of digital growth.
  • Resume and cover letter addressed to Sports Editor Sam McKewon.
  • Five to seven writing samples.
  • A few examples of best video or podcast work.
