About The Position

The Local News Intern will take on a variety of reporting assignments, primarily focused on events in and around North Texas. Coverage includes breaking news, daily news, and utility or service journalism that helps readers. This fast-paced, quick-turn role focuses on breaking news, trending topics, and expanding conversations readers are having online. The intern will use social media to develop story pitches and report stories, and will work with editors to create digital coverage that resonates with the audience. The role may also assist with video and audio journalism as needed.

Requirements

• Good news judgment, accuracy, speed, grammatical precision, headline-writing ability, energy, curiosity, and an ability to produce impactful local coverage with an eye toward digital success.
• Proficiency with digital content management tools.
• Ability to use social media for newsgathering and audience development.
• Demonstrated ability to work remotely using a smartphone or laptop computer.
• Understanding of platforms and audiences, and ability to tailor stories to the publication platform, including voice, style, formatting, and hyperlinks.
• Deep knowledge of SEO techniques and other digital best practices.
• Familiarity with accepted newsroom tools for planning, authoring, and communication.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with team members and across newsroom teams.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and produce stories quickly and accurately.
• Knowledge of digital news analytics.
• Valid driver's license and registered vehicle for travel to assignments.

Responsibilities

• Write quickly and accurately about a variety of local news topics.
• Use social media to develop story ideas and respond to topics the audience is discussing.
• Build stories using links, tags, SEO best practices, attractive web headlines, and multimedia when appropriate.
• Work with editors to develop coverage that resonates with the digital audience.
• Assist with video and audio journalism as needed.
• Report on breaking news, daily news, and utility or service journalism, primarily involving events in and around North Texas.
