Opportunities: Local Area Coordinator 1-2

Government of Nova Scotia•Bridgewater, NJ

About The Position

The Department of Opportunities and Social Development is hiring Local Area Coordinators (LACs) to help deliver the Nova Scotia Human Rights Remedy at the local level. This five-year initiative addresses systemic discrimination against people with disabilities. LACs work alongside individuals with disabilities, their families, and support networks to build inclusive connections with local communities, mainstream services, and clinical partners. The role focuses on building trusting relationships and supporting people to pursue full, meaningful, self-directed lives in welcoming communities. LACs help individuals identify and carry out strategies reflecting their strengths, needs, and goals, and support confidence, resilience, informed decision-making, and community connection. The work uses a rights-based, person-centered approach that is mindful of trauma and adapts to each individual's communication style. It is outcome-driven rather than rules-based. LACs are visible and active in their regional communities, developing partnerships and strengthening natural support networks in collaboration with Regional Hub colleagues. The position offers autonomy in a supportive environment, flexibility in structuring the workday around individuals' needs, and access to continuous learning, training, mentorship, and career development.
