About The Position

The department of Facilities is seeking responsible, motivated undergraduate students to assist as a Loading Dock Associate. Under limited supervision, coordinates shipping and receiving activities at the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Lab (ISE Lab) loading dock. Activities include general shipping and receiving, storage of materials including chemical supplies and waste, and customer service requests. Additional learning opportunities related to technical writing, design and fabrication, and computer science are available.

Requirements

  • Ability to operate materials handling equipment (pallet jacks, hand trucks, etc.)
  • Ability to discern hazards and apply safety precautions based on task at hand and hazard analysis.
  • Possesses organizational and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate, work effectively, and interact with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple tasks concurrently while prioritizing tasks and available resources to meet unit and end user requirements.
  • Capable of independently making sound decisions and utilizing available resources to efficiently meet end user requirements during loading dock peak activity periods.
  • Ability to maintain a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Applicants must be undergraduate students at the University of Delaware.
  • Applicants who are not enrolled as undergraduate students at the University will not be considered for this position.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of general receiving procedures preferred, general stockroom inventory practices, and general laboratory and shop safety practices preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Receives, inspects, and unloads incoming supplies and equipment.
  • Coordinates returns shipments for end users when requested.
  • Coordinates with building end users to facilitate deliveries, pickups and inquiries.
  • Coordinates with vendors and carriers to resolve discrepancies with shipping process.
  • Moves chemical supplies and gas cylinders to their respective holding areas.
  • Maintains loading dock storage area as a clean, uncluttered, and safe work environment.
  • Ensures safe storage of chemicals, perishables, and other items for pickup by end users.
