About The Position

This position is held over the course of two semesters with applications being reviewed in March of each year but the position begins at the start of the Fall Semester. Summer work positions are also available since fish are kept on campus year-round. Pay starts at $12.00 with increases based on responsibility. Experience caring for aquaria is a plus! Training is available. Volunteering in the Ichthy lab (TNR 410) prior to applying carries weight in our consideration of candidates. Plus it is fun! Employees must have CITI training prior to working or volunteering to work with fish. Employees must be available holidays and semester breaks as well as some weekends. Employees are on call should system failures occur. The lives of our fish are highly valued and emergencies have been known to occur, be it building power failures, tank failures, heat failures, etc. The TNR 410 lab has a large variety of freshwater fish used for various courses, and research. The responsibility for the care of these fish lies with the (IASSSP) Ichthyology and Aquarium Science Society of Stevens Point. This student org. has been invited to participate in National aquarium societies as well. There are about 30 tanks for which three people are responsible to clean, feed, test conditions of and monitor on a daily basis. The three managers will work as a team to train volunteers, work out a fish care schedule and offer educational visits from grade schools, interested UWSP student groups or the public. This dynamic team offers 3-4 open lab sessions in concert with CNR, Biology or UWSP events such as Admission days, Welcome week, the Collection Crawl or other recruitment events. It is a relaxing, worthwhile job that may give the Aquaria, or fisheries career-seeker a leg-up in a post-graduate career!
