About The Position

This is a Federal Work Study (FWS) position, requiring FWS program eligibility. The Student Off-Campus Literacy Tutor will work varied hours in a local K-12 classroom or public library, providing tutoring in reading, writing, and/or math to select students. The role also involves assisting classroom teachers with other activities as needed. The position is open until filled, with applications reviewed upon receipt and may close at any time. Cochise College requires a post-offer, pre-employment background screening.

Requirements

  • Enrollment at Cochise College with a minimum of 6 credits per semester and 3 credits in the summer
  • Possess and maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. or higher
  • Current Arizona DPS Fingerprint Clearance Card or ability to obtain, as required by the community host organization
  • Federal Work Study eligibility
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow college policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of and ability to operate a personal computer
  • Knowledge of current technologies and word processing, database, presentation, and spreadsheet software, specifically Microsoft Office applications
  • Skill in effectively communicating in person, by phone, email and text
  • Skill establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other department staff, faculty, students, and the public
  • Ability to relate in a professional, helpful manner and to maintain composure when faced with difficult situations
  • Ability to organize and follow through
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to promote a positive atmosphere of teamwork and cooperation

Nice To Haves

  • For reading or writing tutor position: Completion of ENG 101 with a grade of “B” or better, preferred
  • For math tutor position: Completion of Math 142 or 151, with a grade of “B” or better, preferred

Responsibilities

  • Tutors and facilitates one-on-one sessions and study groups
  • Offers critical feedback on reading, writing and/or math assignments
  • Answers grammar, usage, punctuation and reading questions
  • Assists students with vocabulary and reading comprehension questions
  • Helps students clarify assignments and other material
  • Participates in workshops and orientations
  • Attends training sessions held for student staff
  • Assists lead teacher with general classroom duties
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor
