About The Position

The Learn and Earn Summer School Literacy Intervention Teacher/LIT is responsible for teaching students reading skills in a culturally responsive manner to contribute to their reading/literacy development. LITs report to the Principal and work closely with their assigned Lead Literacy Coach. The primary focus is to provide targeted literacy intervention instruction and deliberate practice opportunities for students. This role involves creating a conducive classroom environment, implementing program materials for effective instruction and assessment, and assessing student accomplishments with progress reports and parent communication as needed. Teachers are expected to prepare for classes, maintain accurate records, interact with other summer school classes, and take precautions to protect students and equipment. Adherence to the SPS code of conduct and classroom behavior rules is required.

Requirements

  • Must be available to work all days and hours of summer school without exception: Monday-Thursday, July 6-July 30, 8:00 AM-1:00 PM.
  • Must attend the professional development week (June 26 - July 2nd from 9:00 AM-3:00 PM) and all sessions of the companion 3-credit course.
  • Must provide a statement on the understanding of what it means to be a culturally responsive educator who maximizes learning during in and out of school time with culturally and linguistically diverse students and families (maximum word count of 250).

  • Approved applicants must complete all onboarding tasks with the Springfield Public Schools Human Resources Department on time and as indicated to be hired.

Responsibilities

  • Meet and instruct assigned literacy intervention classes/groups in specified locations and at times designated.
  • Provide targeted literacy intervention instruction to students and deliberate practice opportunities.
  • Create a classroom intervention environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
  • Implement program materials and approaches for effective literacy intervention instruction and assessment.
  • Assess the accomplishments of summer school students on a regular basis.
  • Provide progress reports and communicate with parents, as deemed necessary.
  • Prepare for classes assigned and show written evidence of preparation.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records, including weekly student attendance and weekly progress in intervention lessons.
  • Interact with and support other summer school classes led by school-based educators as deemed necessary.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Follow the SPS code of conduct for the classroom and develop rules of classroom behavior.
