About The Position

The Learn and Earn Summer School Literacy Intervention Teacher/LIT is responsible for teaching students reading skills in a culturally responsive manner to enhance their reading and literacy development. Reporting to the Principal and collaborating with the Lead Literacy Coach, the LIT will conduct targeted literacy intervention instruction and provide deliberate practice opportunities for students. This role involves creating a positive and appropriate classroom environment, implementing program materials for effective instruction and assessment, and regularly assessing student progress with reporting to parents as needed. The LIT must prepare lessons, maintain accurate records, and support other summer school classes when necessary. Additionally, the position requires taking precautions to protect students and property, and adhering to the SPS code of conduct.

Requirements

  • Must be available to work all days and hours of summer school without exception Monday-Thursday, July 6-July 30, 8:00-1:00 PM.
  • Must attend the professional development week: June 22nd-23rd at site from 9:00 AM- 3:00 PM, June 26-June 30th from 9:00 AM-3:00 PM and all sessions of the companion 3-credit course.
  • Must provide a statement on the understanding of what it means to be a culturally responsive educator who maximizes learning during in and out of school time with culturally and linguistically diverse students and families (maximum word count of 250).

  • Approved applicants must complete all onboarding tasks with the Springfield Public Schools Human Resources Department on time and as indicated to be hired.

Responsibilities

  • Meet and instruct assigned literacy intervention classes/groups in specified locations and at times designated.
  • Provide targeted literacy intervention instruction to students and offer deliberate practice opportunities.
  • Create a classroom intervention environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
  • Implement program materials and approaches for effective literacy intervention instruction and assessment.
  • Assess the accomplishments of summer school students on a regular basis.
  • Provide progress reports, as may be required, and communicate with parents, as deemed necessary.
  • Prepare for classes assigned and show written evidence of preparation.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations, including weekly student attendance and weekly progress in the intervention lessons.
  • Interact with and support other summer school classes led by school-based educators as deemed necessary.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Follow the SPS code of conduct for the classroom which is consistent with established administrative policies and develops rules of classroom behavior which are enforced in a fair and just manner.
