Why You’ll Love This Role The LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) team is part of the Switching Business Unit and is based in Ottawa. Lumentum uses LCOS as the switching engine in its industry leading Wavelength Selective Switches (WSS) that are fundamental to global fiber optic communication. Our team is responsible for development and qualification of LCOS for new WSS platforms and their associated testing equipment. The team also troubleshoots issues in LCOS production and researches LCOS fundamentals for a deeper understanding of this core technology. The selected candidate will work closely with teammates and mentors in projects involving lab work, LCOS device testing, LCOS and measurement equipment control, data analysis and more. The Opportunity We are looking for 1 candidate for an 8-month placement from Sept 2026 through April 2027. 4-month placement would be considered but not preferred. Pay Range: $24-35/hr The position would be onsite and will likely involve substantial time in the lab. The focus will be on LCOS characterization and device failure analysis, with opportunities to work on LCOS test equipment and their associated software. Requirements

  • Knowledge of optics fundamentals such as polarization, refraction, and diffraction.
  • Experience with coding to support data analysis, process automation or modeling
  • Familiarity with device concepts like electric polarizability, circuits, and electronic components
  • Experience with common lab equipment like microscopes, oscilloscopes, multimeters
  • Careful record-keeping and creative problem solving
  • Must be registered full-time or part time, in a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution
  • Eligible to complete a background check as part of the hiring process

Responsibilities

  • Performing tests to validate product designs
  • Develop and enhance internally designed and built LCOS test equipment
  • Support root cause analysis of novel failure modes
  • Support investigations into the performance impact of defects and establishing pass/fail criteria
  • Analysis of test and manufacturing data
