Position Purpose: The Reproductive Research Co-op Student is a trainee position assisting with various research/service projects in our Endocrinology and Gamete Biology Labs including sample organization, preparation and analysis, public outreach, developing education materials, data collation and report writing. This position will assist and provide support in implementing the approved Strategic Plan.

Requirements

  • Must be working towards a post-secondary degree in the Arts and Science Co-op program in a relevant field (Sciences: biology, zoology environmental sciences, etc).
  • Must have proven exceptional interpersonal skills and strong organizational skills.
  • Must possess an understanding of research methods, general lab function and technical knowledge related to the assignment.
  • Must possess good computer skills including current word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills using the English language.
  • Must have working knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Information System (WHMIS) legislation, the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, and Toronto Zoo Safety Policy.
  • Must be capable of meeting the physical demands of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with various research projects as directed by manager.
  • Assists with lab or field research, compiles and analyzes research/service data and reports on results.
  • Provides assistance with the program resources and educational materials related to research/service projects.
  • Assists with daily lab maintenance for assigned projects.
  • Assists with public outreach such as tours, presentations, and workshops.
  • Assists with writing articles, blogs, and other public communications.
  • Performs literature searches and reviews.
  • Provides regular updates to the manager.
  • Ensures all accidents and hazards are reported to the manager immediately.
  • Must adhere to all health and safety policies as outlined by the Zoo, including use of all proper PPE.
  • Reports to the supervisor the absence of or any defect in any equipment or protective device that they are aware of and which may endanger themselves or another staff member.
  • Reports to manager any contravention of the Ontario Health & Safety Act.
  • Works in a safe manner at all times in compliance with Health & Safety, WHMIS, and Toronto Zoo policies and procedures. Performs all duties in compliance with industry standards including AZA, Occupational Health and Safety Act, legislated regulations, and recommended equipment/manufacturers guidelines.
  • Attends appropriate training courses as required.
  • Follows all branch instructions.
  • Other related duties as requested by the manager or senior staff members.
