About The Position

Lifeguards provide personal safety for any individual using the Wake Forest natatorium including the swimming pool, Vortex whirlpool, locker rooms, showers, and surrounding areas through preventative guarding methods. Lifeguards must respond according to sound lifeguarding principles to any emergency situation that may occur in the pool or surrounding area.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 16. If under the age of 18, must acquire a work permit.
  • Current or ability to obtain American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification before position commencement.
  • Pre-Employment Testing of lifeguarding knowledge and skills.
  • Individuals certified through the American Red Cross Lifeguard are subject to skill demonstrations.
  • Individuals seeking certification must demonstrate proficiency in all of the American Red Cross Lifeguard prerequisite skills.
  • Prerequisites: swim 300 yards continuously, tread water for 2 minutes without hands, and complete a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds.
  • Ability to pass the lifeguard water test.
  • Must be able to remain alert.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
  • Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
  • Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.

Nice To Haves

  • Current Certified Pool Operator (CPO) Certification
  • Experience teaching swim lessons
  • Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification
  • Experience working with youth

Responsibilities

  • Maintains constant surveillance of the pool area.
  • Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with WFU policies and procedures.
  • Completes related reports as required.
  • Greets and is professional with all patrons and departmental staff.
  • Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  • Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving and departing from each shift.
  • Attends all staff meetings, in-services, and training as required.
  • Wears the proper lifeguard uniform.
  • Never leaves the pool unattended.
  • Remains alert and focused on the pool area while on duty.
  • Reports any needs or concerns to the Coordinator of Aquatics.
  • Performs additional tasks deemed necessary by the Coordinator of Aquatics, other Professional staff, and the Campus Recreation Executive Director.
  • Always represents WFU in a highly professional manner.
