About The Position

The Department of Recreational Sports is seeking energetic Lifeguards to join their team and promote lifelong wellbeing. This position is for the Campus Pools and involves overseeing water-based activities to ensure the safety of members and guests. Successful candidates will begin work at the start of Fall 2026. The role requires developing professional relationships, upholding service expectations, demonstrating a desire to learn, taking ownership of facilities, promoting cleanliness, enforcing policies, and responding to emergencies according to established protocols. All employees are expected to adhere to the RecSports Student Staff Code of Conduct.

Requirements

  • University of Florida student
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard/CPR/AED/First Aid Certification or willing to obtain by start date.
  • Successfully complete the pre-employment water test
  • Commit 6-10 hours/ week; (may include morning, evenings, and weekends)
  • Complete and maintain UF online certifications in GET803, OOC101, PRV802, ITT102, GET811
  • This position is open to all students who are eligible to work on campus and will be employed through student Other Personnel Services (OPS) and must maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point average.
  • Registered students are employed on a part-time basis, up to 20 hours per week.

Responsibilities

  • Develop professional relationships with co-workers, participants, and guests.
  • Uphold and exceed the expectations of the Cornerstones of RecSports Service: accountability, anticipating needs, attitude, and atmosphere.
  • Demonstrate a desire to learn and apply knowledge as a RecSports ambassador.
  • Take ownership of RecSports facilities and programs by exhibiting a responsible work ethic.
  • Promote and maintain cleanliness and appearance within and surrounding RecSports facilities.
  • Enforce RecSports policies and procedures to promote participant safety and satisfaction.
  • Respond to all emergency situations and adhere to established protocol including pre- and post- incident procedures.
  • Perform all necessary lifeguarding, first aid, and CPR skills as certified by American Red Cross.
  • Monitor the safety of swimmers and aquatic facility users.
  • Prevent injuries by eliminating hazardous situations and behaviors.
  • Monitor access to the aquatics facility to ensure only valid users and their guests are admitted.
  • Enforce rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Perform maintenance and cleaning, as needed.
  • Monitor water chemistry, as needed.
  • Attend mandatory departmental Fall training and all monthly meetings/in-services.
  • Maintain current American Red Cross Lifeguard/CPR/AED/First Aid Certification.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Aquatics & Risk Management Administrative Team.
